We went back down to RP last week.
The weather was not the best, but we made due.
It was real windy, which made it hard to hear those faint signals.


This trip I picked up 21 nuggets, for 23 grams.

My take this year from RP in 3 separate trips, 126 grams.

Dad found 5 nuggets, for 8 grams. Sorry but I dont have any photos of his gold.

Looks like you have the makings for a jewellers shop there.
I see studs, pendants and maybe a bracelet or two.

I know what you mean about the wind. It was so bad down here on our last trip we would have spent at least two full days sitting it out in the caravan.
Not much point trying to hear those almost non-existent ground noises when the wind is screaming past your ears and you spend half the time chasing your hat.

We did take the detour, did OK. not as well as we had hoped. That well is drying up.
I will have to take my camera to dads house and take some photos of his nuggets for posting.
He does not have a clue what he is doing on a computer.
He is down there in RP right now, I talked to him tonight and he had already gotten 2.
In the last few trips we have made, he is really starting to get good. He impressed me on a couple nuggets last time.
We always get each other and listen to each others targets we think might be gold. He found a couple last trip that most would have walked by.

Hi Alan,
Yeah, I dont know why anyone would waste their money on the chest mounted speakers.
Unless your in an area where all the nuggets are screamers.
There is a lot of people that will swear by them. But you will never catch me with one.
Keep those outback nuggets coming in.

Actually, I do use an exturnal speaker.
I've been beeping for nearly 30 years with headphones and thought the same as you about the speakers.
I changed my mind this year.
I first got one of the Radio Shack type and used it for awhile.(On my Extreme)
Then I got a Coiltek one to get away from the 9v battery but I was never happy with the extra lead .I liked the sound though.
When I traded to a 4000 the coiltec speaker went into the trade along with everything else that had a 4 pin plug.
When I started on the 4000 I went back to headphones and was surprise at how weak the signals sounded.
Now I'm back on the Radio Shack one and very happy.

When I was out in the field the other day, I had a undug nugget located.
I let a guy that I have seen out in the field several times listen to it, since he had never found a nugget.
He was swinging a 4000 and he let me listen to it with his machine. I agree the sounds were very weak. and at a higher pitch than the 3000 that I swing. I wonder why minlab did that.
I then let him listen to the nugget with my 3000 and he was amazed at how loud and clear the signal was.
I am not sure if the setting on his machine were incorrect or not. But I was not impressed to say the least with his 4000.
This nugget was loud and clear at 2 inches above the ground with my machine, and you could barley hear it with his coil directly on the ground.
Alan, you seem to make a lot of nice finds. So if you say the external speaker is a good tool to use then I will not bad mouth them. But I sure like the tight fit of my headphones. Especially on a windy day.

I wouldn't take that guy's beepers response too seriously.
As you said, he hasn't found any gold and if he was in 'smooth' mode the response would be quiet.
Sounds like he should have bought his beeper from Gerry and got some good instruction.

I don't think a response has to be loud to be heard.
Also external speakers can't be used everywhere. Where I beep it's just me and my wife.
Maybe you should get a RadioShack speaker/amp and give it a try. I hear they are very cheap over there.Can't get them here.
Not that I would attempt to tell you what to do....
You are doing great as you are.

Yes I have been pretty fortunate lately with a detector, but I always try to keep an open mind for tips on becoming a better prospector.
I dont think a person could ever stop learning about the subject. That is one of the things that makes this hobby so fun.
These forums are an excellent source of information.
I could not agree more with you about this guy needing Gerry's training.
In fact I tried and tried to get him to call Gerry and set up a training session with him, but evidently he was not interested.
I ran into this guy at Rye-Patch on all 3 of my visits this year. Real nice fellow, I felt sorry for him.
Every time I would see him I kept waiting for him to pull a nugget out of his pocket, but that never happened.
He spent a month in RP without a single nugget... I even tried to show him where to go, which was hard because the areas where I knew that there was gold, I had pounded pretty hard and would have been hard for a rookie to scare up a nugget.
But that is the case with most of RP, most of the easy stuff is already in display cases.
Anyways, I cant emphasize enough about the importance for a beginner to get the training.
So many people spend thousands of dollars on a machine that they have not a clue how to run.
Thanks Alan for helping me create this thread, so that others may benefit from it. Too bad we are on opposite sides of the world.
I think it would be fun to swing for awhile with you. I have found that most people who are involved with prospecting are generally good folk.

He will probably catch on in his own way. He's obviously got perseverance, the main ingredient.
Most people in the bush are OK but I've seen plenty change for the worse after they start getting a bit of gold.

I'm going bush tomorrow for a week or so but after reading Steve H's post I feel like I'll be beeping in the suburbs!!
