A Good Day Of Detecting!

My Dad has a friend that belongs to a men's organization and they have owned a piece of property since the early 40's. There is a house on the property along with a picnic shelter and another building that houses a kitchen and storage area. He said that they have never given anyone permission to detect this land in the past but he openly offered it to us today. Like they say, "you don't have to ask me twice".

My Mom and I broke out the 705's and went to work. We had no idea what we were going to get into. Within 5 minutes my Mom found a 1970 Kennedy half! This is the first half that she has ever found in over 20 years of detecting! I started off by finding 4 or 5 dimes in a 3 foot area. I was using the 10.5" MF DD and Mom was using the 5x10 HF gold coil. She's new to the 705 and still getting used to it but ended up finding 34 coins. She found the Kennedy half, 1 quarter, 8 nickels and 20 pennies with one being a wheat.

I'm still a little shocked but I found 131 coins! I found 6 Quarters, 43 Dimes, 10 Nickels, 6 Wheats & 66 Pennies. I also found 2 rings and a gold bracelet, all of which were junk jewelry but never the less, fun to find.

We've only detected about 50% of the property and actually worked the area farthest from where most gatherings would have taken place. I'm really stumped as to why we haven't found any silver yet. Tomorrow, I will look at the dates on my coins but I remember seeing many from the late 60's and one of the wheats was a 1930 something so I have to believe that there is silver at this location.

I expect that we will make a few more trips back to this site. Most everything that we found was 5"-6" deep. Needless to say, I'm worn out for the day after all that digging!

Congratulations!!!!:twodetecting:

From my own experience....the best finds come from places that have never been detected.

131 coins in one outing redefines the word "good". In my opinion, that is a GREAT DAY of DETECTING. Congrats on the coins and surviving all those deep knee bends to dig them! HH Randy

I have to admit....3 days later....I'm still sore from all that digging! We were there for 6 hours and only took a break to grab a sandwich out of the cooler and sit for a minute or two every couple of hours. Probably less than a half an hour of total break time.

As long as the rain holds out on Saturday or Sunday we are going to go back to this site. Like I had originally said, we've only detected about 50% of this property. I would expect that the second half that we've left undetected could produce a similar amount of coins and I'm hoping there will be some silver in there. The only drawback that I see is that this next area is a little closer to a picnic shelter which could prove to be a little trashy. If so, we'll just have to break out the 6" coils.

So far I've only used my 10.5" MF at this location. I expect that when we feel like we've gone over this site as well as we can, I'll start over with the HF coil. Anyone that's read some of my previous posts will know that the 10.5" DD HF coil is my favorite coil. On Saturday when I opened the back of my SUV I already had the MF coil on the 705 so that's what I used. I'll be interested to see if just like in the past, when I switch to the HF coil, I'll find more coins. In almost every instance if I start with the HF coil I will find little to no additional coins when I put the MF coil on and go over the same area. Going the from MF to HF I'll usually find a notable number of additional coins.

I'll update the thread after we return from round two.

Today we went back to the same location that we were at last Saturday. We had left about 50% of the area undetected and were not sure what this week's trek would bring. I was expecting that the area that we had left undetected would be a little more trashy being that it was closer to a picnic pavilion. I was wrong. I started off by finding a quarter on my first two swipes and then it was off to the races.

A short time later I noticed that my Mom was not doing so well. She's fairly new to the 705 gold package but has been detecting for nearly 30 years. I grabbed her detector, re-tuned it (just in case) and went about 40 yards with it. I've never used the coil that comes on the gold package but I actually think there is something wrong with hers. It was very unresponsive compared to any of the coils that I have. I was not able to get nice solid readings with her coil. I grabbed my 10.5" HF out of the car and put it on her 705 and she was off any running. I was a little concerned about the weight of it for her but she seemed like she was managing just fine. About an hour or so later I yelled over and asked how she liked that coil. She gave me a big smiling thumbs up.

This week we both did even better than last week! Here's what we found:

Mom (50 Coins @ $1.97)
1 Quarter
11 Dimes
6 Nickels
32 Pennies

Me (134 Coins @ $6.57)
11 Quarters
23 Dimes
13 Nickels
4 Wheats (40, 44, 53-D, 57)
83 Memorial Pennies
Child's Elephant Ring
Cadillac Emblem

I doubt we have the place detected out but I expect that finding coins will be a little more difficult on any future trips. We have found 349 coins between the two of us and although on both trips we found many nickels and pennies dating to the silver years, we have not found any silver. That really has me stumped. I think we have to send ole Mom's 10x5 coil back and have them look at it. My brother also has the gold package so I may have him compare his coil to hers before we send it out. He's been pulling up loads of coins so I expect that his is fine.
