My Dad has a friend that belongs to a men's organization and they have owned a piece of property since the early 40's. There is a house on the property along with a picnic shelter and another building that houses a kitchen and storage area. He said that they have never given anyone permission to detect this land in the past but he openly offered it to us today. Like they say, "you don't have to ask me twice".
My Mom and I broke out the 705's and went to work. We had no idea what we were going to get into. Within 5 minutes my Mom found a 1970 Kennedy half! This is the first half that she has ever found in over 20 years of detecting! I started off by finding 4 or 5 dimes in a 3 foot area. I was using the 10.5" MF DD and Mom was using the 5x10 HF gold coil. She's new to the 705 and still getting used to it but ended up finding 34 coins. She found the Kennedy half, 1 quarter, 8 nickels and 20 pennies with one being a wheat.
I'm still a little shocked but I found 131 coins! I found 6 Quarters, 43 Dimes, 10 Nickels, 6 Wheats & 66 Pennies. I also found 2 rings and a gold bracelet, all of which were junk jewelry but never the less, fun to find.
We've only detected about 50% of the property and actually worked the area farthest from where most gatherings would have taken place. I'm really stumped as to why we haven't found any silver yet. Tomorrow, I will look at the dates on my coins but I remember seeing many from the late 60's and one of the wheats was a 1930 something so I have to believe that there is silver at this location.
I expect that we will make a few more trips back to this site. Most everything that we found was 5"-6" deep. Needless to say, I'm worn out for the day after all that digging!
