A good reply to an angry anti-detectorist

Went to our small metal detecting club the other week. I told this new couple in our club in front of everyone how I was in a park a few years ago and a woman whose house butted up against the park came at me yelling at me for being there all the time.

This new couple told me I should have told her: "Why don't you slip into something comfortable . . . like a coma."

I got such a good laught out of that I thought I'd share it with you.
Tony

Are you serious? I can not believe any person would have the gall to do that when it's not even their property. People are nuts sometimes.

She called the cops on me one time. The cops told me it was O.K. to detect in the park.

Next time she got right in my face and was yelling at me: YOU ARE HERE EVERYDAY!!!! I calmly replied, That's impossible because I don't detect when it rains or in the Winter.

WHY DON'T YOU GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!?!?
Because I like to come here.

WHAT IF YOU FIND A GOLD RING?!?!
I'd try to find the owner.

OH IM SO SURE OF THAT!!!!
I would.

Anyway, the conversation went on and on. I was thinking she might have a tape recorder going and was trying to get me to verbally attack her so I kept my cool.

Her kids would throw rocks at me as I would be digging. I know she was putting them up to it but I let it slide knowing kids will be kids. I finally went to the Manager of the town and told him about this park and that woman. I guess he knew the woman and just could not believe she would do something like that. I found out she was a teacher and dealt with retarded kids and kids with learning disabilities. It seems she was burdened down with some mental disabilities of her own too. She moved. Yay!
Anyway, it always pays to be soft spoken with these idiots.

You did the right thing to "blow her off". I am surprised how many posts on this subject go the OTHER way, as if it's somehow our highest calling, in this hobby, to make sure no one's feathers EVER get ruffled. I mean, the whole concept of not making someone mad, as if it's going to hurt our hobby if someone ever takes issue with what we are doing, etc... I sometimes have taken the stance that "it's tough for them if they don't like it", and get beat up for that. There are md'rs who think it's our utmost calling to make sure that everyone is ok with where you're hunting, what you're doing, etc... After 30+ yrs. of this I have realized that you have to have a tough skin, and a "so what?" attitude sometimes. If you/we think we have to go skulking away in shame, seeking "permission" for every step we take, is, in my opinion, wrong. You/we have to accept that sometimes there are kill-joys out there, and NO, you can't please them. So let some people get ticked. So too are you bound to get someone upset if you just walk down the street. Who cares?

I make sure I have permission etc and do make a special effort of digging holes and covering unlike some I have met and I am friendly to people if they ask questions but if people object after all this then they can go take a flying leap because I am with you on this one Tom. To a degree you do have to have a "so what" attitude and just plow ahead and enjoy the day. You can't satisfy everyone and if you tried too you'd be in a mental institution. :bouncy:

Howdy Y'all
I have to agree with Tom on this one, It's like that old song by Ricky Nelson "Garden Party". You can't please everyone, so ya got to please yourself. Or sump'n like that. Now go detect'n.................Hombre

Hey Tony, After reading your post I am almost sure why that lady was mad! SHE LOST A RING! Was probably afraid you would find it.I will never understand people, instead of asking for your help and giving you a description in case it was found. Several times I have had people seek my help, twice I was able to find their jewelery. One was a girls grandmother's ring passed down to her, wasn't really worth much but the gratitude I got for finding it was worth a million! That lady assumed something I am sure is wrong, that all people are greedy and you were detecting just to get something for yourself. If she only knew how many times we all take out thousands of dollars worth of equipment and come up with only a hand full of face value coins. It's not the value but the EXPERIENCE!
Have a good one

Tony - WOW ... I haven't had anyone confront me like that yet ... mostly I just get people that are interested and want to follow me around and ask questions. My worst experience was in a small, old local park. The first and only time I went, about 45 minutes in to it, I saw a door open on a house across the street and a huge dog come running out. It spotted me and came running with it's head and tail down. As it got closer it was showning teeth and growling. I used the EXII to keep it at bay and had my digger in the other hand as I back all the way to my truck. I know the owner sent it after me, and without the digger and detector to keep it back, it would have bitten me.
Thanks for the story - Neil
