First of all our 3rd GRANDSON was born this morning! AND his name is HUNTER!! How cool is that! I don't think his Mom and Dad named him that because of metal detecting but it works for me <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> Mom and Baby are doing great!
I took off a couple of hours this afternoon and hunted my favorite field again. This is a place I thought was hunted out <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin"> I was using the WOT and a most of these targets were really bad signals. The kind you aren't sure if they are trash or iron or what. I kicked away the debris and flattened out the dirt and they came in fairly clear. The rusted away shield nickel came in at 3 on digital on the XS. The lowest reading on a nickel I have ever found. I learn more things every time I take this detector out!
Those were shield nickels #37, #38 & #39 to come of of this field so far. The 3 indians make a total of 86 so far with 85 of them dated 1879 or before <img src="/metal/html/grin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":grin"> I think this places deserves Indian Patch status don't you Neal?
 
Nice finds Keith. That 1870 IH is worth a few bucks, as it's a semi-key date in the series, if you didn't know.

Great finds Ken, its really a shame the soil isn't more kind to those IH's. Have you found a 1877 there yet?
 
That's the second one I have found this week there. I think that makes 4 total from this field.
 
It is but you need to be prepared to hunt a while to find them and they are DEEP and / or IFFY!!
 
Thanks Don! I like to hunt for the pre 1880 Indians and this is a great place for them!

It looks to me that you have one of those perfect sites where you can dig everything and have little worries about modern trash.
I'm just wondering what the totals for different kinds of coins out of this area are. Should be a good snapshot of what circulated at the time. I find the number of shield nickels incredible. And I would assume similarly aged sited should give up as many but in trash they are very difficult to find versus silver and copper coins. Also assuming this is where you found all the nickel three cent pieces that I suspect would require a person to dig tons of foil to ever find one in most other sites.

Here's the totals so far. I would like to see more data like this from everyone that hunts. The site dates 1871 - 1883 and has been farmed since then (and probably before 1871):
