I think that you are right most of the clad that I dig is in bad shape so you better keep all the newer pennys.I never seen a quarter do that just pennys.Wouldnt it be nice if they started making gold coins again,look at all the money the Govermant would save instead of making junk money,

Hey Bob,
your not kidding, and there have been a few dimes I've found lately that are the same way - BUT they are still rather glossy looking ones yet, so they were not in the ground long. Older dimes seems OK, so are they just not as concerned with the planchets they are making them on or something? they mainly Zinc Penny's I can understand, and I have found a few quarters as you show...but more so in the dimes....
Oh well, I have my Grandchild (still not ready though, going on three yet) but a few of my friend's kids and grandchildren who Savage and I are trying to get hooked, and also on coin collecting, so the future looks bright, but obviously, and in agreement with you - not the coins in the ground. Maybe by then, Metal Detectors will go two feet or more and they can finds those out of our reach. Hopeful, for them.
Take care Bob, and always a pleasure to see your comments, and right before Savage and Sunzabeach convinced me to get the EX II instead, I was putting money down for an X-Terra 50, and still think their lightweight and superb ability combined was the cats meow (but I do so love the EX II).

(EX II)I know what you mean about the Explorer. I had upgraded to the SE but for the ease of use and comfort of hunting all day with no aches and pains. I have found that the X-Terras are a good alternative.
As for the Dimes, I think its having the copper sandwiched in there that speeds corrosion.

I have the converted EX II (Factory change to EX II), and the original White 10" Coil and the machine is a real blast, but will admit it is HEAVY after a long day and I prefer the 10 inch, even in some of the areas with a lot of trash (I only have a Sun-Ray 5 inch besides the stock coil - why I posted some other questions & inputs before about coils and results).
What are your thoughts for the depth, performance and any other differences with the X-Terra? Also, which one of the series do you have (I thought I had read a 70)?
I remember your comment for your past career history that made it a wee bit easier choice to switch to the lighter weight for the X-Terra since it still had very high performance, and still really thinking of adding one (now the 70 instead of the 50), instead of upgrading to the SE (which is not really necessary with the EX II). My only issue is that Savage and Sunzabeach has the newer version of the EX II compared to mine and there is a difference in reaction time (when discriminating) that I would prefer to not have to deal with, but slowing down fixes it mostly, and maybe I should just sit back and not do anything, but the weight of the X-Terra's is an incredible difference to say the least.
Any more thoughts on the subject? I appreciate ANY input from you, as you were the first I know of that did what I was thinking of doing, and so far I haven't read any regrets, especially since we can pull out the Explorers anytime we have hot batteries!

(EX II)Been wondering about that for some time also. I been finding 2006 pennies that already have holes in them just laying on the surface. Might be from the fertilizer on them but have found plenty of 90s and 2000s with corrocion holes riddled threw them.
I started about 6 months ago saving all the nice zinc pennies from roll hunting. Even pennies in circualtion seem to be corroding. So I figure one of these days there is going to be a very noticable shortage of the these newer zincs and they might be worth saving.
I also agree that as time passes our detectors will be able to reach down 15-24" confortably or even see the coins. Problem is I think the ways the laws are going it will soon be illegal to even clad hunt on any public land.

1st I'm surprised Minelab updated your EX.
As for the rest of your question - As I have stated before, I hunt along side an EX II every weekend and by hunting in All Metal and using the 10.5 round DD coil in 7.5 kHz I am able to unearth targets near as deep as my friend. It is a much simpler machine to run which makes it a fun machine. You enjoy hunting more I believe.
I do use the XT 70 and like the idea of some control over such things as the GB.I have ordered the 3 kHz coil and feel it will give me a little better depth on my deep old coppers.
For the weight and ease of use AND the Minelab quality I don't see how you can go wrong.
Plus, you always have the opportunity to go prospecting without buying another machine if the bug ever hit you.
