When I used to work at the Gospel Rescue Mission in Tucson one of our regular homeless guys would come in. I saw his shortened detector in his pack and noticed a modification. He had lost /broken the screw that holds the coil to the shaft and had replaced it with a carved piece of wood to fit. He said it worked great !
