This weekend I wanted to get out and do some digging. Most the ground is still cover with snow but a few places are melting. There is an old 1800's hot springs and motel that has been torn down with just the parking lot around where the pool was left.. A great place I thought to find older coins. They in tearing down the old buildings even scrapped of the old asphalt that had been put in in later years. After getting a few signals and digging them I see what was to be the problem. Another layer of asphalt down about 3-4 inches. I had gotten a 12-12 reading and digging with a small Japanese gardening pick was after a little time break through the 3" of asphalt and found and old buffalo nickle date wore off. I found a half of dozen Wheaties and an amusement token not enough to pay for the e trac but fun afternoon. Old asphalt starting to decompose is not that hard to break thru and much of are past history is buried under it . Previously I had not even considered old asphalt parking lots.
