A once in a lifetime find (long)

I would have to say that the odds are pretty crazy high, I mean just for the fact that that coin was not detected back in the 70's or 80's is pretty amazing, the signal was not that great, it was on its side, but it was digable.

Okay I took another look, could possibly go lower XF it really depends on the extent of ware on the front and rear which is difficult to judge in the pics. I'd be interested to hear how it grades, I'm guessing you will have it graded and slabbed?

I tell you, unless you really need the money you might want to hold onto that baby for a while. The price of the 16d Mercury has shot up a lot over the past few years. Of course theres always sellers remorse, I sold off my 1895-o barber dime and wish I'd kept it now. Its not worth much more than I sold it for but just regret having sold it just the same. Again super find!

Don just sent me the better pics, is that mint luster near the feathers? I bet a good coin doctor could boost its value but I wouldn't even breath on it.

Way to GO! Ray
Your a great hunter!
I'm proud to be one of his hunting buddies.
He regularly finds great old coins in previously well hunted parks in this area with his Minelab.

He says, "look deep for good signals in good old dirt".
Not just pretty words.

Dan

Like any hunting sport it takes time and some previous scouting to be succesful. The hunters that stumble into the woods opening morning with no plan on where to go very seldom gets a shot. Some get lucky. But those that study and scout before hand have a better idea whats there. And when they do find a keeper other than clad it makes all the pull tabs worth while. It all ways seem that on my last path to the truck I find a keeper. Other wise it is mostly clad around here. Clad pays. The more old books I look at I am finding out more sights that produce. So seeing all this silver rolling in from other hunters
lets me know they are still out their waiting to be dug.
right place at the right time.

go with PCGS and NGC and stay away from ANACS. Coin auction might be even better after you have slabbed!
Dealers will never give you what that coin is worth - most of them are out to make a hugh profit. Stay away!
Good luck!

Congratulations Ray!
I am new to the detecting game, so I really like hearing about these kind of finds. Heck, I get a big thrill out of just finding a penny.
