This had a rubber diaphram encased in electrical resin that crumbled when I handled it. I think it is something to do with the needle. looks like chrome or nickle plated brass. I'm guessing the piece fit into the big horn and held the needle?
 
I also have one of those that I found about 15 years ago.
It says, REPRODUCER licensed for use only on Edison phonographs. Sold by Nat'l Phono Co. It has a flip open top that I haven't been able to open yet.
These are 1930's or earlier. (from searching the internet.)
