A PI Silver Question.

I have spent the last 6 winters looking for Spanish Reales and Escudo Gold coins at Sebastian Inlet (1715 Fleet). Escudo Gold is extremelly rare and generally would be fair to say that it takes a hurricane to make conditions that good for finding.
Silver Reales of the larger type can be found at the sametime but during the rest of the time without hurricanes the depth of the sand above the heavier coins makes finding the heavier coin almost impossible.
During certain times the lighter silver reales are possible to find because they can be moved by currents.
One needs a detector that is deep, one that likes silver best and likes thin, small silver items.
The question is:
The Goldquest and several other of the PI that Mr. Foster makes are setup/made to like Gold best with the freq. and delay...Could not a detector be made that is "Silver Best" and have the depth of a high powered PI?
Could one buy a Goldquest or Deepstar and have it calibrated to like silver best? (A Silverquest SS)

Hi Frank
A unit could be set up to be responsive to silver over gold. The best choice of detector

A 1/2 Reale is smaller in size that a US Dime and thinner. As they go up 2 Reale, 4, 6, then 8 Reales they increase in size (dia.) and thickness.
My Goldquest SS with the 10" coil will hit a 1/2 Reale about 3 to 3 1/2 inches, a bet biggger that deep increases...
My Excalibur 1000 is about the same. Of course after 7 or 8 hours the Goldquest is really easier on your arm...
As you can see a detector set up for the small and bigger silver like the set up for a Goldquest SS. would be a favorable machine but most likey not one that people would stand in line to buy...
My thinking was with the new machine coming out there will be Deepstars that might be, with slight tweeking, a excellent silver machine...
Looking for an edge...Frank

With all the mistakes in that post I doubt you can understand it, I wrote it and don't. Hopefully corrected>

My Excalibur 1000 is about the same on its depth of the 1/2 Reale. But it is much better air test on the larger of the Reales than the Goldquest. Of course after 7 or 8 hours swinging the Goldquest is really easier on your arm...
As you can see a detector set up (dedicated)for the small and bigger silver, like the set up for a Goldquest SS is for gold, would be a favorable machine but most likey not one that people would stand in line to buy...But I will bet there are silver coin hunters out there looking for a deeper machine like a PI.
My thinking was with the new machine (Goldscan) coming out there will be used Deepstars that might be up for sale and with slight tweeking, a excellent silver machine... Is this possible for a Deepstar or Goldquest?
Looking for an edge...Wanting to find those Spanish Coins...Frank

Mr. Bill,
With the Goldquest turned up to 15 or 20Usec is it more sensitive to larger silver than when set at min?
Thanks
Tom

Hi Frank,
I have some old silver coins that are 0.65in in diameter and 0.02in thick. The signal decay from these is 50uS. Compare this with a 1964 silver US quarter, which has a decay of 400uS. Ideally, for maximum signal, the transmitter pulse should be as long as the object decay time, so for the quarter, a TX pulse of 400uS would give the best signal. However, if the TX pulse is only half as long as the object decay time, you would still get 95% of the maximum signal.
The standard Deepstar has a TX width of 100uS, which means that the signal from a silver quarter is only 75% of the maximum possible.
The transmitter pulse is only one aspect of the detector that can be changed to optimise the performance on a particular class of target.

Erik, We have old parks in S.F. that in the past few years, that are being "newly discovered" w/the Explorer. It takes some experience with the fluty tooty sounds, but once mastered, are going deeper than the the Whites and Fishers of just a few years ago. Sort of a new "silver rush" going on.
So my question is similar to Franks: If a pulse machine, as I've seen on the beach, can easily exceed 10" on a dime for instance, could I get that same depth in turf, while still passing tabs, nails, foil, etc....? What kind of depth could a person get in these conditions on a 1)penny/dime? 2) quarter? Thanx!

Is this going to see "under" nails, ala.... Compass 77b style, and still retain its abilities? TID, depth, etc...? In other threads, I see that some seem to think so. If so, that in itself would make it a ruins/demo/ghostown hunter, even if it did loose some depth and TID (high vs low conductors aren't too imp. in these type spots). At present, I grab my Shadow X2 or 77 for these hunts.

Hi Tom,
Best to wait and see what happens in the field tests. It is primarily intended for the beach, where it will have useful target ID cabability, and inland where its ground cancelling ability will enable it to be used effectively in iron mineralised areas. I had wondered whether it would be good in parks, where there is a lot more trash, but we will have to wait and see. I would probably use an 8in coil in this situation, to help target separation and pinpointing.
Eric.

your post over and over again...I am not a tect person as I have stated before, I am a end user person...(One who buys/supports the work of a tect person) I really try to understand--but 'much' I do not...However this answer finally got through to me in a manner a number others have not..I appreciate your return and your time...Thank you...
I am going to post a photo of a 1/2 Reale that has been tossed and turned in the ocean for almost 300 years. It is not much but I am the first in almost 300 years to touch it, I sure would like to have a few more...A detector that would like these as much as I do is my desire.. I was in hopes that a used Deepstar or Goldquest could be available/purchased your new detector to be released and with some modification from the wizards hands...be a good silver machine???? I know this type of machine would not be in demand from many, but it was a attempt on my part.
Bare in mind this is half the size of a US Dime and it is about half the size of a normal 1/2 Reale...Most are worn off or broken like this one...Hard to find a perfect one..
Frank

Mr. Bill, thanx for your input to this thread. I'm seeing some contradictions though, between what you say, as per high vs low conductors. It was clearly stated in other posts, that the G5 would give a high tone for low conductors, and low tone for high conductors. Sounds like a difference to me. Ie.: more than just passing nails, but also a way of guessing between high and lows too.
Granted the iron also has a "low tone", but other threads say that the sound is quite distinct from the low tone of a penny/dime. Would that sound difference leave much room for mistakes, or is it *distinct*?
In a particular park I'm thinking of, if a person could reliably get penny/dime signals beyond 8", they can get some nice stuff. The soil in this park is funny, and the Explorer's TID starts to waffle at that point. To compensate, we learned to dig signals that aren't locking on too well. The downside is, we get fooled by too many deep rusty nails. This is why I was wondering if the G5 would work here, since the TID isn't affect by depth and poor soil. Thanx!
