A question about aluminum screwcaps and square pulltabs and the GTI 2500

kickback

New member
Does the discrimination, imaging and sizing allow you to not dig these. In other words do you have a good idea when you swing across them.I was already to buy a GTI 2500 this spring and got a different brand as a surprise Birthday present.I just have to have a GTI 2500,lets just call it a late Mothers Day present to myself.Thanks.Bill

The imaging keeps me from digging the screwcaps. Sometimes if they are flattened they will show as coin size. It could be a large piece of gold though.

My two best finds ever rang up as size 5.5 (pulltab) one size B one size C. If I was not digging everything on those days, they would still be in the ground and some other lucky SOB might own them now.

Chris

OOPS. Screwcaps are a lot easier to leave in the ground with a GTI 2500. They almost always image size C and ring up around penny. There are, of course, exceptions.

Screw caps will mostly lock into size C. If you have the coil 2in or closer, then just about all targets will show up as size B, so just raise the coil a bit in these situations. If you use one, it will be really important that you get the target in the centre of the coil when you are sizing a target, otherwise you will have an incorrect reading and leave a good target behind.
The good news with pull tabs is, no matter what detector you are swinging, provided it has a 12 notch system or more, you will find that they will bounce around between several notches. Some of them will lock into a certain spot, so all you can do, is dig them up. That's just part of the hobby and you will come to appreciate that it's not a big deal after a while. They will often give them selves away if they are just under the surface by giving off more hits on the coil than a coin will at the same depth. You would need to practice this at home, so that you know the difference.
Good luck with your decision. The folks here are most helpful and generous will their advise.
Mick Evans.

With the GTI's, if you have a screw cap that is just under the surface, it will give an overload signal as you pass the centre of the coil over them. (The overload signal, sounds a bit like a machine gun being fired) Coins that are less than an inch in diameter, won't do this.
Mick Evans.
