What is you method for hunting derelict county houses you can see from the highway?

Do you even bother, knowing that just about everyone else with a detector has probably worked them?

I went to two of them but someone else (many someone

I would find out the property lines and then work sections of the yard at a time. Do sections in squares and work up to the house if you think it has been heavily worked. Most people will work the front and back doors first and then everything else (hop scotch around the yard). So they may not get the fringes of the property. Besides we all know that just because it has been heavily worked doesn't mean they got it all!

Good luck

Hi,

Try to think like the owner. You have some money and don't want the wife and family to know about it. If you stand on the porches where would you put the money for easy access where no one would accidentally find it? This is for a cache. Also, remember folks were generally shorter in the old days.

Each location is different, but people generally think the same way. For dropped coins and such, where did they sit outside, or eat? Now days, folks stay inside, but in the old days folks stayed outside in the shade until sundown as the house was hot, esp.the kitchen.

Having done a few hundred of these, I try to find where the sat or ate outside. Then around trees, fences, stone walkways, under porches, and such places. After looking in such places, I try to visualize how the place looked when people were living there. Then, a standard grid pattern search of the yard area.

Just a few thought, Good Luck,

Roper

Also , see if you can find where the clothes line was . Maybe tied between two trees , ... You can tell where the tree has a strangle mark , where it grew around the clothes line . A good place for coins ! HH !:detecting:

DJR.....good suggestion.
I went to a place today and did just that.
I marked out a place and worked it to death.

Fantastic!:bouncy:Great suggestions all around!:thumbup:I'm glad to see that you are trying the method that DJR suggested. In cases like this, it is often productive to hunt "in reverse". Rather than working from the structure(s) outward, work from the fringes of the property line, inwards. Thanks for sharing Old Katz. I hope you find some goodies!:happy:Happy Hunting!:)

As has been mentioned check around the cloths line. Also if any big trees are close look for evidence of a rope swing ( everybody had one ), also two trees close together where they could have hung a hammock. Look for the old outhouse pit ( there may be more than one ). Look for the old dump, usually out back in a depression or ravine. If there are any caches around, the deep fork in a big tree is one spot to look. Course that will require a ladder. If these were farm houses the farm hands were fed out on the lawn, usually close to the kitchen. Another hiding place for stuff was inside the cistern but care must be observed as his can be dangerous if you're alone.

The suggestion I gave is for the reason others have mentioned on here...if over the years outbuildings were removed or something was torn down or if a fence was removed a doghouse existed a pit toilet and other such places were in the yard they may not be there now and you more than likely will find where something was at one time out away from the house when others did not especially the garbage dump!

And of course I think the opposite that other detectorists do. Especially if it is a site I know has been detected by others.

Go to where they may not have been!
