A rather unusual find...

I dug the penny in the photo a couple of days ago and when I looked at it I thought it was a 1914 wheatie, but when I turned it over and saw the Lincoln Memorial I knew something was off kilter. I showed it to a local guy who knows a lot more about coins and and collecting them than I ever will and after looking at it through a magnifier he said it was a broken die coin. He pointed out the T and Y were also missing from liberty, which I hadn't noticed, and said the gouges on Abe's cheek and out in front of his nose were from the broken die. Could be, in any case it's an oddity I'll drop in the keeper box.

That is a collector item for sure.

Even if it isn't worth a lot, it's a great conversation piece.

Its interesting to note the US Mint claims these dont happen. Its their story and they stick to it.
