A real detecting post and a nice picture as well, what the heck? And, I do not remember anyone posting one of these before.

On Sunday I dusted off the XLT and headed for an extinct town upriver a few miles from me. The weather was cold but I hoped to find some ground that was not frozen. I took this picture from the townsite and it turned out real nice, it is worth clicking on to see it full size.

There are a lot of homes that are just plain gone in this valley, in fact, all of the homes were dozed and hauled off 35 years ago. You just have to look around for evidence of a home site and start detecting. The landscaping bushes are a good tip-off that a home was once here.

Sadly. the ground was frozen down to about 6 inches and digging was a real problem. I found a few coins and a watch in the frozen ground. I was about to give up and wait for spring when I hit a signal that read like a silver dollar. TIme to dig that one! At about a foot deep I dug up this wierd looking thing. I had no idea what it was.

It was not until I got home and washed it off that I discovered it was an actual cool find. If you look close it is an inkwell! I have not found one of those before, and dated at 1900, this is an old find. I think it is kind of cool.
Thanks for looking DC
