Ever wonder what date range you might expect to find in a collection of coins might look like?
I have a collection of pennies, one cent pieces to some, that have accumulated for about the last 5 years. It seems that once a penny leaves my pocket it does not go back in again. Here is the breakdown. The sample size was 192 coins total.
47% of the coins are 2000-2007.
19% of them where 1990-1999 or 66% are in the past 2 decades.
18% of them where 1980-1989 or 84% fall within the past 3 decades.
7% of them are from 1970-1979 or 91% inside of 4 decades
2% from 1960-1969
7% Were American of all dates. I did not date these. Some may have come from US trips but most did not.
We use US change in Canada. Our banks don't want them but stores don't care. Everybody in Canada has a US coin in their pocket. We find it funny the reaction of sales people in the US who "freak" at our "same size and denomination" coins.
If that means that an 1875 coin was dropped in 1, 2 or 3 decades from minting I don't know. But in this day and age it might.
Just food for thought.
