A Visit to Montana

Mason Jarr

New member
Last week I went up to Montana to scout an area with my buddy, who lives there, where we drew archery elk tags for the upcoming season. Since I was making the drive, I decided to go up a couple of days early and do a little detecting as well. I only had half days on Thursday and Friday since we had to get our gear into the backpacks and check out maps, etc. The first day his wife, who is a school teacher, took me to an old school that was closed at the end of this school year and is now up for sale. I worked around there for a few hours and came away with some Wheats and a Mercury dime. I went for lunch and then met up with my friend's brother and he took me over to their parents' house. He and I worked the back yard for about 2 hours. He's interested in learning to detect, so I spent some time showing him how it all works and I let him dig the targets we found. We ended up with a silver Washington, another Merc, a costume jewelry ring, religious medallion and a handful of Wheats...including a 1916S, 1925D and 1929S. The next day I went an older house that had burned in 1904 and was rebuilt in 1906 on the same foundation. The owner didn't know when the original house that burned had been built, but he said that the property had been detected several times and most everyone said there was too much trash and nails....a perfect place for the CTX. In short order I found an old sterling ring and a few feet away I picked up a solid and deep 12-41. I dug down about 6 inches and hit a huge root from a pine tree. I could hear the target with my ProPointer and with a little more effort I wrangled out my oldest coin to date....a 1900S Barber dime. It's in rough shape and has quite a bit of pine pitch stuck to it (and I mean STUCK). I would have liked to work that property a little longer, but the owner's sister showed up and she had a young (and out-of-control) son that thought it would be fun to ride on my coil while I tried to swing it. Hopefully, I can get back on it the next time I visit. After our scouting trip over the weekend, I started my drive home today, but had to stop before I left and hit a nice looking park on the outskirts of town. I picked up some more Wheats and a 57 Rosie. All in all, it was a pretty good trip. I gathered up 5 silver coins, 23 Wheats, a sterling ring and some interesting trinkets. I also found a pendant with the name, Matt Carey, in my buddy's front yard. It's not marked, but I think it's silver, also. Here's some pics:

Thanks for looking!

Nice finds! Secondary question. Did you find any Elk? That was the primary reason for going.

Good job Mike - you got a little bit of everything there. NICE hunt!!

Saw a black bear, two mule deer and two white tails, but did not SEE any elk. There is a ton of sign though and my buddy worked 7 different bulls there last year.....although, since he was also archery hunting, he wasn't able to close the deal. He scored on a really nice 6X7 there two years ago. He about wore me out though. There's a big difference in our age. I'm 54 and he's 27. I think he takes it easy on me, even though I am in pretty good shape for my age. Even still, it's some of the roughest country I've ever hiked/hunted.

Thanks, Tony. I see you've been racking up the silver while I was away! I thought I might catch you, but you're pulling away. LOL. My detecting time is slowly disappearing. I don't think I'll get out again this week until Saturday. You'll be at 100 by then!
