? about a good signal

Got a great signal today at 00 27. This is usually a quarter or LC (only dug 2). Love these especially when they're deep. This one was 8", however. 12" down and the signal is still there and no coin. Now I am thinkin it is deep iron, so my DFXer friend checks it for me and it reads 93 VDI for him. This is a great signal for him too. He says take another inch out and if nothing then let it go which I did. If it was a coin, we both feel like it would have been there.

Any input here from anyone is appreciated.

It might have been a bigger target even deeper as these fool the depth gauge. Do you have the X-1 on your detector? This thing helps tell you if the thing is just a couple inches deeper than ur hole depth. Was probably a big ol' relic or maybe even a big ol' iron or copper pipe as these will sound sweet especially if there's a 90 degree bend in it.

I get those sometimes myself. Had a few out in a field today and they lined up with a farm house 200 yards from the road so im guessing they were some kind of pipe. They can be a very deep can or a large piece of rusted iron.

I get a lot of those signals too. They usually ID as a quarter of half dollar at 6 to 8 inches, but I can dig down to 12 inches or more and still not find the target. I dug one a few days ago that was a 00 28 at about 7 inches. The digging was easy so I kept going because I was curious. At about 14" I found a large rusty box or pipe. It was rusted through in places so I enlarged the hole. Of course I was hoping to find handfuls of coins, but all I found was about 8" of empty space. I didn't feel a metal bottom, just a lot of soft damp dirt. I don't know what it was, but I found a similar target about 15 feet away. Couldn't check that one out much though because it was almost dark. My guess is that most signals of that type are very large, deep targets
I'll still check out those type of signals when possible and fulfill my dream of finding a cache, but with my luck I'll end up with my arm stuck and featured in a story in Weird News.

I get the ghost signals too. The pistol pointer thing I just got is a little big and not the greatest for shallow holes because it goes off 5 inches away from the target. However, finding coins in shallow holes is not my problem its the ones that I maybe miss because I don't dig deep enough that worry me. The ghost signals might make me complacent and give up on digging deep coins too early. The pistol thing is VERY GOOD for that, because of its detecting depth. I just wiggle it in the hole and I know I didn't miss anything with in maybe 5 inches of where my hole is dug to.

Hi Aaron,

I agree with the other posters - big, deep item of some sort. I just got permission at a 1750's farmhouse which has been turned into a small museum to find items for the museum. I dug a fairly shallow (about 4") Mason jar type lid with the glass seal still intact and noticed that I was still getting a pretty good signal with my X-1 at the bottom of the hole. I dug down about another 6 - 8 inches and I was still getting the signal. I finally hit something fairly large and metal at about 12" or so. I thought it was an iron pipe as it had that texture and almost filled in the hole, but I could tell with my Lesche where it seemed to end so I was curious and kept digging a little. Out popped a really old (ca late 1700's to early 1800's) head to a hoe with tang attached - this will make a nice addition to their display. I'll post a pic when I have a chance. Every now and then those deep signals turn out to be an interesting relic. If it pinpoints in only one direction it's probably quite different than an item that pinpoints in two.

I've had those signals too and found nothing. I agree with the others that it is likely a large deep object.
