ACE 250 and 4 inch coil

I have owned an ACE 250 since they first came out. Didn't like it at all. So off into the corner of the garage it went. That was about 3 years ago or so. To show you how much I dislike some metal detectors I gave my Explorer away. I didn't sell it I gave it away. Last January while at the Shot Show in Orlando I happened upon the Garrett display. I talked at length with a real nice fellow who advised me that maybe I needed their 4 inch coil. I bought it. Today was the first time I decided to try the Ace 250 with the 4 inch coil installed. I ain't ever puttin a bigger coil back on it. I found four quarters, two nickles, six dimes, 47 zinc pennies, one copper wheat penny dated 1952D and one necklace. This was at ball fields and tot lots. Pull tabs lock on real good as nickles. I hunted mostly in the jewelry mode.

What was your problem before using the Sniper coil? The 250 is about the most popular detector out there.

Uncle Willy, I was use to using a whites which pinpointed really easy for me. I also had the sensitivity turned up way too high. Now that I know how to use the Ace 250 with the 4 inch coil I will be using it a lot more. Thanks RSOJim

I honestly believe it is the pinpointng that gives most people trouble with the Ace until they reach the "ah-ha" moment. Once a person gets a thirtysecond instruction from a fellow Ace swinger or simply does enough trial and error it is as accurate and easy as any detector on the market.
Kind of like learning math back in the school days...I just don't get it.. I just don't get it.... Oh..now I get it, this is easy. That is the ah-ha moment.

I haven't done the Pirates X since I got my 250. Now I just wiggle and bump the target with front first, then coil sides, then coil back if needed, at least that works for me. Wiggle it and find the edge of the target w/front of coil, then I hit it with both coil sides while keeping my eye on the spot where the front of the coil targeted it. Sometimes the target is right on the front part of the coil, other times its inside the 2nd coil. The farther inside the coil it is the longer it takes me to pinpoint. When I started I probably dug 6" dia plugs, now its 2-3" mostly. Tried that screwdriver pop-it -out a few times but no luck so far.

Yep, due to the pattern of the loop, the deepest objects will pinpoint a
bit to the rear.
Here is a picture of the coil pattern I modeled to fairly much match
coil that was capable of 8 inches. I used antenna modeling software to
draw the pattern diagram, and I used the actual frequency of the Ace 250
when modeling.
As you can see, at the deepest levels, the strip of dirt you are detecting
is pretty small compared to up top, and also when pinpointing, the object
will move nearly to the center of the coil if you were tecting an object at
the very limits of that coil and machine. Most targets won't be that far off
though.

When pinpointing, make sure to constantly center from left to right when
drawing back to the end of the tone. "Stock or 9x12 coil".
When you get close to the cutoff, the pattern is pretty narrow.
It's the widest at the center. The pattern matches the shape of the coil.
Here is a pix I made for pinpointing the Ace 250. Shows how the area
of the tone matches the shape of the coil.

wow, tks a bunch for that input. From your diagram, that tells me allot of deep coins can be missed if I go to fast. I guess I need to learn to slow down. No wonder lots of times when I search the same areas(playgrounds), I find deep coins that I missed over and over times before...
