Ace 250 and gold

Old Katz

New member
I know the Ace is not a gold machine but I could not help but notice an artical in the Garrett Newsletter about a couple people who did find a few nuggets in Alaska. How deep will the Ace pick one up. I'm sure it depends on the size and depth.

It does depend on size, depth and shape. Gold was also found in Australia with the ACE 250 Also. And then of course, theres the thousands of gold rings that have been found. The ACE is very sensitive to gold.....lots of people have also commented on that. :)

Yeah when I field tested it I checked it out on some nuggets and it done quite well. Can't remember the exact depth but it was good. It is sensitive to small gold or any small item. One of my finds today with it was the head off a thumb tack buried at three inches or more and it hit hard on it. I've found smaller items than that and it never ceases to amaze me how it hits on such tiny targets.

as there was an article done on that very subject in the August edition 2008 of the Australian Gold Gem and Treasure magazine. the article was written by 'Gopher' and can be found on pages 30-32.
He deliberately looked for hot ground, using his GP 3500 in Victoria's Golden triangle. The spot in particular, was Belgian Reef, just west of Dunnolly. The ground there is considered amount the worst mineralised ground that you will come across. When he found this spot, he pulled out his Ace, cranked the sensitivity up to the max ( most would baulk at doing this) and hunted with it. The reason that he cranked up the sensitivity, was so that he gave the Ace the best chance to hear a nugget when he passed the coil over it. The cost of doing this, is that the Ace gave off a lot of false signals. He said that a good target still gave off a steady solid signal. Apart from his ears being assaulted by the onslaught of false signals. He ended the test, with a 044 gram nugget found at 4 inches and 2 Chinese coins. Like he said; the Ace isn't designed for nugget hunting, but it can DO it.
Just 6 weeks back, I took my Ace to some local gold fields for a hunt. The ground was fairly mild, but the Ace ran smoothly. No gold found, but the site was where a major gold rush accrued back in the 1880's.

Thank you.
I never considered sweep speed as being a factor.
What would be a desirable sweep speed for the Ace 250?

Actually you can sweep it pretty fast without missing targets as it has a rapid response and recovery, but if you want to hit every target for sure a slower speed works better.
