Well folks, I've had this little Yeller Feller a week and am slightly miffed at todays incident. I dug a plug (my usual 3 inch) and pobed a penny out of it. I was rubbing it with my fingers to see the date and ooooops, I DROPPED the little sucker beside the hole. Well sir, granted the grass was long (maybe 6 inches) and I couldn't find my little penny. So I stood up (not easy at my age) and scanned, first the hole, then a 2 foot diameter around the hole. NO PENNY, THAT'S RIGHT, I SAID "NO PENNY". Am I going nuts or what??? Please, some one explain this to me, I never had this problem when I owned a Fisher many moons ago.
 
Tell you what. I'll give you $100 for that junk detector and you can put that toward buying a Fisher:rofl:
 
Maybe it landed in the cuff of your jeans? Maybe the side tool pocket of your jeans? Maybe it fell right over a surface nail? Did you try to look for it in pinpoint? Maybe it was all a bad dream? Don't give up on the little detector...
 
Thats what I was thinking... It probably landed on it's
side, and he might need to approach the hole from various
angles to get it to ring up. It's moments like those that
I'm glad I have a pinpointer.. :) Worth it's weight in
gold. But the 250 should find it again. Might just need to
to try from other sides of the hole. I'd go one way, and
then turn 90 degrees and try again. Also he could try the
pinpoint mode, which is a full time "all metal" mode. Might
show up then too.

some detectors won't see a coin in the bottom of a deep open hole. Just the nature of the beast. That's where a pinpointer is perfect as stated before.
 
...its only a cent. Let it be and find another one. It probably landed back in the hole, on its side or into the "Space/Time Contiuum Vortex" that all the GOOD coins fall into.

Now it'll end up in Canada :canadaflag: for those guys to find next year.
 
This isn't at all that uncommon. In fact, our Canadian clad and other objects with the same conductivity, often give a good reading, then when you try to dig them and miss on the first plug, the target disappears. What actually happened, is that when you disturbed the coin the first time, you broke the halo which had formed around that target. The halo was the feature that allowed you to read it in the first place. So......what you have to do now is look for it in pinpoint (all metal) mode, which should give a reading on it. just try again. :)
 
With the coin setting on top of the ground I think it makes the Ace over load. It goes quiet. Lift the coil higher in the air and you might pick it up.

I have the green fella and he plays the same trick.:ranting:

When I lose a signal I automatically switch to all metal mode if that don't pick it up I'd reach in the hole grab a handful of dirt and wave it in front of the coil (as long as you have no rings on)9 times out of ten the coin just fell in an awkward position.The Canadian Clad dimes always pull that stunt on me when I hunt in coin mode. I dig the hole and the dang gremlins stole it !:razz: Where did it go...switch to all metal mode.... bang...they you are. Just like John said once you pull it out of the hole the halo is gone.

Forget The White......think Yellow.....or green:lol:
 
Ah the old disappearing trick. The coin was most likely in the bottom of the hole on edge. Once you destroy the ground matrix by digging you have disrupted the ability of the coil signal to zero in on the coin and if it's on edge the problem multiplies. You should have scooped all the dirt out of the hole and scanned that. I carry a soup spoon just for that purpose.

Also if it fell in the grass on edge it became virtually invisible. When looking for a coin that may be on edge tilt your coil about 30 degrees or so. That way your signal has more of a chance at hitting the face of the coin. If the dirt was soft enough it could have fallen and stuck in the side of the hole on edge, producing another hard target. This is where one of the Sun Ray probes really shine.

If there was any rocks or hard objects around the hole the penny could have hit one and bounced out of the two foot circle.

Yeah as small as a cent is it has a million places to hide. I dropped a coin once and it went in the side of my shoe.
