Ace 250 detecting many UK coins as 'ring pulls'!

Hi..

This is my first post, so please be gentle.

After being curious about metal detecting since I was a kid, I decided to buy one.. The Garrett Ace 250 was an obvious choice so I bought one. I am really happy with it.. Its well made, works well and on my first outing to the beach, found coins totalling a whapping

If you go on YouTube their is a gentleman from the UK that sells and demonstrates a variet of brands. He does some really cool demonstrations witht he Garrett Ace 250.

We have the same problem here in Canada, our quarters and dimes range from iron to coin, depending on the year. A quarter or dime completely visible on the surface will sometimes not even register a sound on the ACE or many other detectors. They were designed with American coins and so many of the Canadian coins are made with material that will hit all over the map, many times in the mid-tones like you are experiencing. With lots of practise, the little subtle differences will start to make sense and you should be able to distinguish between some of the targets, but like my bud John-Edmonton always says, we all dig a pile of junk, we normally just don't post it. Too much discrimination anywhere will surely lead to missing the best targets.

Your detector is programmed to ID American coins only. You will have to set uip your own system as to where your particular coins ID on the display.

Jon....that's good information to know, and having mostly coins and gold rings showing up where they do is actually a good thing. The ACE was designed to dig US coins. I live in Canada, so my coins usually show up in different places other then the coin icons. I have just learned over time how to read them, and it poses no problem. In fact, I hopefully will break the 100,000 coin mark before Christmas this year after about 15 years of hunting. I have found that some other makes of metal detectors won't even read out coinage at all, and some will just knull on them, figuring they are iron. You actually got one of the better machines available for reading your coins.

Once you get it figured out, you may want to type up a "HOW UK COINS READ ON GARRETTS" sheet. I have done it for Canadian coin hunters and saved them a lot of learning curve.

And...I am jealous....I wish most of our coins read where yours do...and, nice, thick high karat gold rings also read in that same area. Keep digging my friend, you are well on your way.
