Ace 250 falsing

New member
I own a 250 and i don't know if it's me doing something wrong or the machine itself. it false hits alot. I'm in coin mode and it will sound of in iron (which is disc. out) and i'll go back over it and its silent and just marks on the screen. to be honest it sounds off on alot of disc. out items. its frustrating and honestly ends my detecting early. all my connections are tight and my cord is wrapped as it should be. Maybe it's normal and i'm expecting to much out of this machine (my 1st) bt to me if a item is notched out it shouldn't sound off. Also i'll add that i keep dropping the sens. also but it still happens.

Usually happens with bent nails with mine... I go over the sounding target a few times, and it settles on iron. Then I move on to better targets. I'm leaving the iron targets for future hunts when I feel like wasting time for iron, hoping for a surprise item. (Always commenting about my former-rich field of coins).

[size=large]one thing you can take to the bank and that is nothing is concrete. all the sounds can go to just about anything in this world. alloys make things go off when they supposedly shouldn't. like the tips of nails going off like silver. you did hit on what could of been the problem but you say you tone that down so maybe it's your swing. who knows. when i had my ace 250 i was constantly finding my swing was too far. i was lifting the coil too far off the ground and getting false signals. that would be a curable problem. then the worse case is it's the coil. thats the only ideas i come up with.

If iron has rust on it, it's quite common to hit on both the low iron ID, and the high rust ID.
So I don't consider that as "falsing". To me, falsing is when the machine beeps when nothing
is actually there to detect, but instead falses due to the maybe hot ground conditions, electrical
interference, excess vibration, floppy cable, or whatever.
Also, the discrimination is audio only. In reality the machine is always wide open as far as
what it is detecting. So you should always see the visual hits, even if the ID segment is notched
out.
If it's sounding off on actual low conductivity targets, that show the low conductivity hits
on the screen, it just means that the object also shows a higher conductivity apart from it's low
conductivity core metal.. And rust is a very common reason for this. So most rusty iron "bounces"
low and high on the ID scale, and naturally you will be seeing and hearing the high hits in coin mode,
but only see the low hits visually being as that's notched out as far as audio.
Coins almost never bounce around on ID. They are usually pretty stable, and show the
same ID every time. Ditto for other non rusted items like tabs, etc.. They often hit in the
nickle range plus or minus, maybe higher if large, but they rarely bounce around like
rusty bottle caps or nails will.
Nothing is ever perfect as far as target ID.. So I usually dig even most bouncer targets
unless I'm fairly sure that they are trash. Some can be relics that I would like to dig.
But say I'm under the eve of a roof, and there are zillions of rusty roofing nails from
roof jobs, once I get a grip on their typical response, I'll ignore em all and only dig the
stable targets, or the ones that look drastically different from the nails.

A lot of time a zink penny will sound off like iron depending on soil condition. if it a solid signal dig and find out what it is JimCVA

Sometimes the falsing is caused by the cable not being properly tightened on the back of the control head.

Some areas will cause problems. I have seen this several times. Detector will not act right. electrical interference,,I really don't know why .

If you are having this problem at different places,,,you may really have a problem with your machine.

How does it work in air tests? does it false?

When I first started detecting,,I broke a detector on a fence post once. lol Because it would not quit sounding off. I broke it up real good!!! Then later with a new machine,,in that same place,,,found out something caused this to happen, with it too.

A electric dog fence will make a detector go crazy,,false signals.

Im guessing maybe the ground is loaded with rust and small metal junk. This will make a detector go nuts too.

And then,,,just maybe the coil is bad. But if it only sounds off ,in a air test ,over a coin,,,its not the coil.

Cupcake,I do not know your experience level. However, many 'new' detectorists think the disc control will make virtually all metal disc'd out, silent. Doesn't work that way. As mentioned by previous posters, many types of 'disc'd targets' can sound off due to various reasons not having to do with the detector's capabilities, whether a Garrett or another brand. Just observe what targets are 'falsing' and see if they don't fit into the categories mentioned by several posters here.
