Ace 250 Settings?

King-John

New member
I got out today to check and see how the 250 would do out in the field did very well in collecting $1.95 in clad in 1.5 Hr hunt I did notice the deepest I got was about 4" I was using the 9X12 Coil, Sensitivity one down from max.
I'm trying to see what settings everyone else is using.
Thank You, John

for new coins in the grass i run the senc around 4 bars in all metal & only dig nice solid coin signals. when hunting old coins i run senc at 7 bars or as high as i can without the ace getting to noisy in all metal & i mostly dig only the deep sounding signals. in the tot lots i run high senc in all metal & dig everything except iron.
but at the end of the day it"s what ever you feel happy with that will find you the most as some people get frustrated digging tons of junk & dig only coin sounding targets wares others are happy to dig the junk & find more gold but remember it"s just a hobby so get out there & enjoy yourself & you"ll find the style of hunting/best set up you like the best

Most coins are from surface to 4 inches. I would say you didn't get your coil over a deeper target. Overlap your sweeps by 50%. Grid off smaller sections either with reference points or in your head and search a grid at a time. Look around and say in your mind - "from this tree to that one and from that rock to the sidewalk" This is gridding off a smaller section. This way you know where you have been the next time you hunt the same place.

Yeah, four is good. I tried once at 6 bars and when I got a weaker signal, I changed it to four bars and dang if the signal didn't get clearer! Could be the ground signal didn't interfere as much.

Yeah sensitivity too high will often mask a good target. I rarely run my GTI's over about 6 and I get some pretty deep targets. I told one guy some time ago to drop the sensitivity on his GTI and he went back over areas he had covered many times before and picked up some old coins he had missed in prior hunts.

Hi John,
When using the Ace 250 I usually run around 4-5 bars discrimination fist time running over a are then around the second time Ill turn it up around 6, just someting have been doing and my results havent been too bad. Good post its interesting to see how other work their machines.

Hey John
I run mine at 5 bars in tot lots,Then back it down to 1 bar and search around the metal pole's And under the metal steps.Found my 1st gold ring under those metal steps.it's pretty amazing how close you can get to those poles even with a standard coil.

Set the mode on Jewelry and the SENS at mid range. Boost the SENS when possible and back it down when it isn't.
Switch to all metal when it gets squirrely, and 8 times out of 10 you'll find iron is in the way.

Other than that, have fun!

Now if you want to get into some settings, I have a nice DFX I'll sell you.....

i usually run mine at mid sensitivity level and i usually keep it on jewelry mode because it finds both the coins and the rings and others but it will also find the pull tabs in this setting but some gold rings come up as a pull tab when im at the beach i use all metal mode alot

Thanks everyone on the help, looks like a lot of ya like the all metal mode or jewelry, in these modes where are you guys setting the Disc.?

That is the disc setting. You probably mean the sens setting. Just set it at 4 to 5 bars and hunt. I like either all metal or relic mode. But if I don't have much time or tired I'll flip to the coin mode.

I hear you on the DFX Dave. I've got an XLT and it's a real pain to set up each time I pull it out. It feels like you've got to press a million buttons just to set it up right for a hunt. It won't be a keeper. Push one button on a Garrett and you're away. Cool!
Interesting point about switching to all metal on a dodgy signal.

Iron and SENS too high are usually the main culprits wth the Ace, when it gets to acting weird. The result is usually a lot of bonging and boinging, cursor jumping all over. And you're right - Garretts are dead simple to use.

I use the big coil almost all the time. I'm in NJ and we don't have much of a soil problem. I run full sensitivity or one bar down. I always use all metal. I want to hear all the sounds. In my mind, I just block out the iron sounds. I beach hunt and hunt the woods (with a lot of iron). I just listen for the good tones and then slow way down and check all the signals in the area. I want to know what gave me the good signal. You will get a lot of false signals when you run at high sensitivity, but I don't miss any good signals either. I want to see if there is something that could be masking the signal. If I pick up a good tone, I'll pinpoint all the signals in the area and identify all the targets. I've done very well with the Ace. It paid for a new E-Trac. I think the E-Trac is a little better then the Ace, but not much. You have to develop your own style of hunting with the Ace and learn to listen to what it's telling you. It's a great detector.

More money don't necesarily make it better. That's where Garrett got the jump on the competition. They took goodies from their more expensive machines and slipped them into the 250 and sold it dirt cheap. That's why, after several years, they are still selling like a house afire. Other companies keep coming out with new machines trying to knock the 250 off its perch but it ain't happened yet. I have a feeling that the next Garrett to hit the market will be a mind blower. Hope they hurry up with it before I die so I can play with it..

Ofc ourse you're right, Bill. But it should, you know?
And you'll never die - you're too crabby.

I checked out the E-Trac just after it was released. It has it's place, but I think that it was a sideways step by Minelab. It has a faster recovery speed than the Explorers, but they have effectively thrown out the Smart-find screen by dumbing down most ferrous readings to read most targets as a 11 or 12. Iron is still distinctly different. The tones aren't quite as good as the Explorers either. Although the ergonomics have been improved, they are still a fair bit heavier than the Explorers as well. They get upset when folks compare them to the Explorers, but as it has replaced the Explorer now and shares a number of it technologies, it's hard not to compare them.

I'm new to this......Got the ACE 250 for Christmas.

I turned it on and found silver in my first hole. Went on to find 2 wheat pennies and several clad coins that evening.

When to a local lake last weekend and found .....

1 - Pendent of a Cross (Stering silver)
1 - men's ring (gold plated)
1 - toe ring (cheap)
1 - lady's ring (silver plated)
1 - lady's high school ring (14K gold w/Ruby)
1 - braclet (copper)
1 - ear ring (cheap)
several clad coins

Like I said before, I'm new to this hobby.........is this a normal day's find or was I just very lucky?
I found most items in wet sand while hunting in jewery mode with sensivity set at 4.
Anyway, I'm hooked and can hardly wait for this weekend.
