Ace 250 When to dig?

bud332

New member
I was wondering if someone could help me with a question about the ACE 250? I have had my ACE 250 since June and 99% of the time I run in coins mode and just dig items where I get a bell tone on both sides of the swing. Should I be running in something other than coin mode and should I be digging if I only get a bell tone on one side of the swing and not the other? I am looking mainly for coins. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks,

Bud

I dug mainly for coins too until that first gold ring popped up. 8 grams of 10K gold! That's a ton of clad coins. I generally use the custom setting and have discrimiate set for everything to the left of the copper penny and the two to the right of nickel. If I am in a particularly trashy area I sometimes just go for coins dime and above. Not very often though. I also only dig stronger signals. Generally if it signals metal on 3 or 4 consecutive passes. Then I judge by pinpointing. If it looks too big to be a ring or a coin I usually skip it unless it is a particularly strong signal. I haven't dug a pop can in a long time. Chances are I have passed over something good that was fairly deep. I can always dig it next time. In my experience silver coins and rings that I have found are always really strong signals. When you pinpoint the 250 will sort of growl rather than ring. While I have only found 8 silver coins, they have all done this. I have yet to find a silver dime but I'm up to over 1000 clad dimes. I think that is mostly due to the sites I frequent. Just my opinion. I've been using the 250 since June. Had a Bounty Hunter before that for about 4 years but I never was seriously into the hobby until last fall.

Good luck on that first chunk of gold! It's out there and in the most unlikely places. I got another 10k ring tthis morning at an elementary school. Much too large to fit a child.

What you set your 250 on depends on where you are. If it's a really clean area running in jewelery mode will get you anything but steel. If it's trashy then you want to run in either coin or custom and notch out some (I use the first 5 on the right and the nickle) Coin mode puts 6 on the right. What you dig comes from experience. Even for as much as I have found and used my 250 I still dig a pop top from time to time. They are hard to separate from nickles sometimes and some rings also fall in that same area. It's up to you. Dig ALL targets or learn what you really don't want to dig by digging them then paying attention to what the ACE told you it is.....We all have our own ideas on this one for sure. Good luck.

What kind of sites are you hunting. What are you digging up? Have you dug many one way bell tones? If so what were they? If your running in the coin mode then why are you not digging the nickle hits? There's a lot of rings that beep at nickels. Yes, there is a ton af trash in that segment too. But dig it up.

You're missing a lot of goodies my boy. Many of those one ways could be coins on edge or badly corroded coins or even rings catty wampus in the ground. Apparently you haven't been using my "twitching" procedure. When you get a one way signal belltone or not - hold the coil centered over the target and whip it rapidly back and forth about two inches each way. You'll be surprised at how many of those one ways turn into two ways. Also, dig a few to see what is there. The most accurate discriminator is your digging tool. It never fails.

AS for the mode that is a matter of choice.

Yep, most of the deepest coins I find with the
250 are one way ringers at first. So, if you ignore
one way ringers, you are going to miss the deepest
coins, not the mention the ones on edge, etc.
Also, on the really deep ones, the one way ring will
often be sporadic. If I didn't actually stop and double
check them a bit, I'd end up passing it up. I also use
the "twitch". :) I'll do a twitch while pinpointing too
just to verify I'm on what I think I am, if the area
has more than one target.

I will agree with this 100%. And the "twitch" is the best thing you can do. It will bring in a target you might have passed by. Been there many times......

My totals since starting last year in August (first had to learn how to use the 250 then winter came) are 7563 coins for $383.23 plus that ton of neat stuff!!!:detecting:

I like the ALL METAL mode in the areas where there are few signals. Iron is a great indicator of human activity. Where there is iron, there is likely to be copper and (hopefully) silver. Once I determine where the iron concentration is, I will usually switch to either RELIC mode. Many older finds are pewter, and pewter can sound like foil or nickel. It really depends on your MD goals and the area you are in. If there was 18th century or older activity in your area, I would recommend RELIC mode for these reasons.

[quote Uncle Willy]Show us the ton of neat stuff. One of these days I'l drag out all my trinkets and do dads and post them.

Bill the only problem with that is most all of it is in 2x2's(coin flips)in slide sheets in a binder. Do still have some stuff in my shadow box though.......

While hovering over the target in pinpoint mode release and press pinpoint one or more times until the target shrinks down.
