Ace and saltwater beach

Eric

New member
I want to get an ace 150 and convert it into a waterproof machine like some of you did. But how well does the ace handle the salty wet sand and water?

Thanks, Eric

You have to keep the sensitivity turned down. Overall, it handles the salt better then some of the other more expensive units.

John and Uncle Willy, thanks for your replies. I am really tempted to try these mods on the ace 150.

Eric- I've used my 250 on South Jersey beaches since I got it last June. You will learn which beeps are good ones with practice. Salt water beaches are quite different depending what area of the country you are. I have to discriminate the salt out. Take the sens down at least three bars and try jewely mode.Stick with it 'cause that first gold in the scoop is unbelievable.

I bought my Ace while I was living near Daytona beach. I found lots of rings on the beach, but they all where in dry sand, which is some great MD'ing. You have to turn the sensitivity down 3 or 4 from max for it to quiet down to the point that you can use it. I found lots of stuff in the wet sand, but you lose half your depth. Where the salt water moves around the coil it will cause a lot of falsing, which made the situation worse.

It is also important to know how and where to find things on the beach. A sanded in beach is like MD'ing in the Sahara desert. Crowds of tourists can be a gold mine, especially near a spot where they get inebriated. It is good to hunt that place at day break. There is so much more.

I have never tried it totally under water in a calm area when I went snorkeling. It may quiet down, but again you wouldn't have the depth.

I would go ahead and make an underwater 150. There are a lot of fresh water places to hunt. The ace is a great little detector, with some good depth.

After I bought my other detector, I found out how handicapped I was MD'ing the beach with my ace. Where as my ace is the BEST detector in tot lots, my other detector can't get within 16 inches of the equipment.

John n W VA. Seems like we traded states here. I used to live in Winchester Virginia and now I live in Port Orange Florida just minutes south of Daytona. I have an ace 250 and am about ready to get the excelerator coil for it. I was wondering if you would consider sharing some of you old hot spots down here since you don't live here any more and I would be glad to give you some good tips on the Winchester area if you are near there. That whole I-81 corridor is smack full of treasure and I don't mean just metal detecting. If you like old historic kinds of stuff I can point the way for you.
