In the Line of Fire in Afghanistan
Specialist Josh H. feels protected by the power of prayer.

When the rocket screamed over his hut, Josh was doing something
to which you can easily relate -- sitting in his room watching a
movie.

The horror he felt then, and in the moment seconds later when it
landed a scarce half mile away? Well, that's another
matter entirely.

"Here" is the Ghazni province of Afghanistan, where U.S.
Army National Guard Specialist Josh H. (last name withheld for
security) has been stationed since March 29 as part of the security
force for one of the many provincial reconstruction teams that are
doing so much to help the Afghan people rebuild their war-torn
country. Ghazni province consists of 16 different districts, with
Ghazni City situated at over 7,000 feet elevation on the direct road
between Kandahar and Kabul. It's definitely in the line of fire
in a volatile region, but as of late May, Josh and his cohorts have
been spared violence. "On all fourteen convoys I have been out
on so far, we have never been attacked. I know prayer is a major part
of that."

Josh knows a thing or two about the power of prayer. He is one of the
thousands of military men and women being prayed for through The

outreach. But the 20-year-old native of Southern AZ was also
raised in church, at what is now Grace Community Covenant Church,
where he played bass guitar for the worship team.

Josh enlisted in the Army National Guard three years ago.
Originally it was meant to be a stepping stone to proceed into active
duty, he said, but last year he decided he was better suited to stay
in the Guard. That led to his deployment to Fort Bragg, North Carolina
in January and ultimately on to Afghanistan. In his short time there,
he's seen the positive impact of the Coalition presence on the
Afghan people.

"I can personally see they no longer fear the
Taliban, and are able to go about productive lives, without living in
fear," he said, adding that some of the fears he faces in the
line of duty "are rocket attacks on the F.O.B. [Forward
Operations Base], I.E.Ds [Improvised Explosive Devices] and
mines."

, Josh appreciates your continued intercession for him. "I ask
for continued protection and to be able to get closer to the Lord. I
am almost always out on a mission during church services, and there
are not very many believers here to help with my walk."

U.S. Army National Guard Specialist Josh H. has a mother
and father and two sisters, both of whom are married. For more details
