Adventures in Doorknocking continued...(long)

First off .... way too many BEAUTIFUL finds posted while I was mia too comment on individually so I'll thank you all now and keep them coming !!!!!. The pics posted is what keeps me grinding away!!!!!

I haven't been on lately as the shack took a direct hit during a lightning storm. Lost my PC, dvd player, stove, tv is all screwed up but works, blew out GFI breaker switch in breaker box, and blew out telephone jack in wall..(smoke and melted), etc. Had to buy a new PC, hire an electrician and just now getting over most of the carnage from the hit..... Have also been squeezing in some more hunting with the bulk being got doorknocking.

Three of the dimes including the toasted one came from the "ol trashy ballpark" here in Podunk. They've been s-l-o-w-l-y doing some project there and every once in awhile I see some dirt dug up so then I hit it. Managed 4 more silvers total from the little dirt moving since I first noticed the work being done, otherwise I've quit hunting there as it's been done to the best of my abilities...?????

The old house is one in the little Burg down the road from Podunk where I've had some success lately. I've been aware of the old place for several yrs now but finally hit the courthouse and got the owners name and made contact with them. The owners were reluctant at first and then dumby me opens my mouth and offers to mow the place....lol They jumped on that and later we met to work out the details, etc. Place hadn't been occupied in approx. 30yrs. So I mow for over 2 hrs and am tired but anticipation is killing me so I start swinging and not 4-5min later my first target is the NICE V nickel...!!!! I'm thinking "Oh Man...this is it....you hit the motherlode!!!!!!!! After 2+ hrs mowing and another 5hrs (2 days) of swing time I only found 7 coins TOTAL at the place? I actually think it's probably the worst yard I've ever hunted for coin count? Anyways...I did get the nicest V that I've ever dug and was really surprised how well the V cleaned up.... So I've got mixed emotions about the old place but highly doubt I'll ever offer to mow again....lol.

I also did that old log home I'd started awhile back that I felt had been hunted previously as no wheats popped up....just newer crap coins that I gave to the kiddies. I was talking with the owner on day 2 and had shut my machine off and was about to tell him I'm all done, etc but there was about a 10x10' section between me and him that was the only spot I hadn't hit yet and for some reason I decided to finish the place and in that little section I dug the SLQ. That SLQ was the only good target, not very deep (5") and was about the deepest target dug on the whole place? They just weren't there?

In between the log home and the old house in pics is another place (corner lot) that I also scored. Spent 2 days there and dug over 70 coins with 2 good coins ('41 merc. 1897 IH) that also weren't deep and once again I couldn't find a deep target at this location either?

So.....all 3 of these places are in a row next to each other and no deeper targets at any of them? Plenty of trash but nothing out of the ordinary? I also gridded one way with the NEL SS then generally go back the second day and grid 90 degrees different direction with the Ultimate. The idea is to clean up the shallower stuff with the SS then hit any I missed and/or the deepies with the Ultimate? I also use conductive and TTF. Thing that puzzels me is no deeper targets at all three places....?????

The war nickel came off that one private I scored awhile back where the goofy owner changed the rules on me so I left after digging up only two coins.

All 8 wheats came from the 4 privates I landed. So with the lousy wheat count and the low keeper numbers between 4 privates I'd say I haven't done that well recently with the privates? Average a little better than 1 keeper per private? Don't get me wrong...I love the coins I've found but talk about a long slow grind? On the other hand....could just be a slow streak and I KNOW it's nothing but a grind in the public areas (with my skills anyways)? I think about going into the big city but then I think about how I HATE the big city so I'll most likely keep the grind going here closer to Podunk and hope the next private is a good one and keep my eyes peeled for fresh dirt in the public arena....????

Got one more private lined up yesterday before I left the Burg that doesn't look too promising but it was offered up by a passer-by so I'll take it...(could be a good one..who knows?). Also got a turn down at another place, I knew it would be a NO as she was given me the "stink eye" before I even got out of the PU........

More adventures to come I'm sure..... Hopefully with a few more keepers for the hrs involved.....

Enjoy the coins.......

PS....forgot to take a pic of the nice toy cap gun I unearthed on some private ground awhile back......

Sorry to hear about the lightning hitting your house. I hope you had INS to help cover the cost of replacement and repairs..

Nice group of finds and that's the nicest V I've ever seen come out of the ground.

Thanks Mark!!!!!!! Yeah, I haven't dug a ton of V's, maybe 13-14?, but definitely the nicest for me. I was shocked how well the brown/orange came off.....

Had a go-round with the cancer a few yrs ago with no ins. so that took a bite outta my retirement stash paying for that. To save $ I let the house ins. go also so no ins on the hit either.... I seem to like living on the edge.....lol Just another little speed bump on the road of life...got thru it once again!!!!

PS...deductible would have been about what it cost to get back to normal anyways............

Thanks again.......

Holy smokes oneguy, a direct lightning strike on your house! Sorry to hear that!
The only good thing is the house didn't catch fire. Were you home at the time?

Hang in there, just when all seems lost with no hope, the sun will shine again maybe not the next morning but it will shine sooner or later. I speak from experience.

During my working years, i did a lot of research designing lightning suppressor circuits for electronic equipment. While they will protect electrical equipment from voltage surges or quick voltage spikes from a nearby lightning strike, ain't nothing gonna protect electrical consumer equipment against the massive energy of a direct lightning strike.

Still, lightning grounding rods on the house roof will divert some most of that energy to ground and pretty much all of it if the hit is nearby.
Living out in the country, i've got lightning rods on my house, garage, pole barn and even the dog kennel roof. A few years ago while in my basement, i think i had a direct hit on one of those rods as i heard a very loud boom that shook the house instantaneously causing the copper water pipes in the basement to jump, vibrate and smoke (i grounded the copper water pipes with a large guage braided copper wire to the metal well pipe). Just about soiled my underwear.

Another time, same thing a loud boom that shook the house, looked out the window and there was one of my my large maple trees roughly 50 yards from the house burning and smoking all along its length. Luckily the rain put the fire out quickly.

Back to detecting, i think unless the private property has been sodded over, leaves left to rot on the turf, most finds are not gonna be really deep as in some parks. If you found Indians and Vnickles, thats probably where the bottom layer of coins are at that site.

Got some nice finds there.
Enjoy reading your door knocking adventures as i hate door knocking myself. After reading your persistant struggles with it then finding oldies,
you deserve an A for effort!

No down and out here, just another bump in the road, life is good and I LOVE retirement. If it isn't a lightning strike....it'd be new tires for the PU or something else? Just another PITA that seem to always come up shortly after the last one you just got done dealing with?

Electrician believes what took out breaker in breaker box was the fact I have two extension cords going from outside of house to a barn shed and one to my shop. He said they act like antenas and took all the static and took it directly into the house/breaker box? Whatever...it's done with now but man was it scary at the time.

Yeah...got a lot of hrs into those few coins above but I've got time and maybe a little spoiled from that one private awhile back where I got 6 silvers, 1 IH, 1 silver ring from that yard..... NEXT one will be good.....lmao! Fun part that makes the whole doorknock thing almost worth the BS is you get that anticipation thing going again.... Not knowing what's around the corner so to speak? You have a pretty good idea of the grind you'll most likely encounter at the park sniffing out that deepie everybody has missed..........

thanks..........

Great finds! Old houses = old coins! I found few buffalo and V nickel are below 12-13 deep! Like around 15-13 . If deep then I digging because if its not coin then its something OLD!
