After my last hunt...I KNEW there had to be a SEATED COIN hidin' in the iron:yikes:

Well I told myself after my last hunt; that finding 3 Barber dimes and 2 injuns was a perfect way to end the season. However...there was also this little nagging voice in the back of my stubborn, buzzed head that kept saying..."You know there had to be some seated coins in that park you putz".:crylol:

Needless to say...I ventured out into the cold to see if I could "hustle" up another coin or two from this old beat up park that gave up the 3 Barbers and 2 injuns. Don't get me wrong...I was...and am 100% satisfied with my hunting season this year. The problem is..and it isn't really a problem...is that I love this hobby and the joy it brings me. It is a challenge each and every time I go to one of these pounded parks ...to pop out one more deepie that someone walked over....including me. It is also a pleasure as much as it is a challenge...because of the way it absolutely chases the depression or stress away. It truly disappears as soon as the headphones go on.:) This hobby is PRICELESS...and is absolutely in my blood for life.:super:

I truly don't think there is anything left in this park at depths of anything less than 8"...unless it's hidin' in heavy trash. On a good day...I might get one or two signals per hour to investigate. On a bad day...well the pouch is void of anything other than a couple tiny pieces of wire...and maybe a few rusty nails. When I can bring myself to take off the S.E.F coil for a few minutes...I'll pop on the 6" Excelerator and see if I can't pull another deepie or 2 hidin' in the dense trash...but the 10 x 12 isn't coming off anytime soon.:detecting: It just continues to amaze me every time out...and just seems to hit an older layer of goodies left in the ground by others..including myself ...using other coils. I know for a fact this park has been...and IS "explored" on a regular basis...because they were the ones who tipped me off to some activity here around the turn of the century.:beers:

After a short while I ended up right back near the big tree where 2 of the 3 barbers came from last time. I got a deep injun right off the bat...and the blood was now flowin'.

About 15 minutes later I got that sweet faint warble I was hoping for...and it repeated fairly well. It was a real faint sound and I would have liked to have seen the depth meter...but seeing the screen at this time of day is absolutely impossible. What time of day you ask??....almost ANY time of day?:ranting: It just drives me nuts...but it has also made me more in tune with the SE:thumbup:...since I can't ever see the screen and must hunt pretty much by sound alone.

Anyway I dug a nice plug down to 9" and it was like rusty sand at the bottom. Almost like a big chunk of iron had dissolved and faded away into the soil....and there was also a piece of an old rusty bolt there as well. I ran the probe and it sang:thumbup:....so I snatched up a little clod and pinched it. Out popped a rusty THIN slug. I turned it over though...and saw the glimmer of silver peeking through.:clapping: I could barely see a wreath through the rust...so right then I knew I had one more Barber from this site. I carefully stuck it in my pouch next to the injun and plugged away.

About 30 minutes later I got a deep token and then came accross another injun/token type of hit...and it sounded DEEP. After finally having the moon...stars...sun...clouds...etc...lined up just right:cool:...I was FINALLY able to see the depth meter...and it was buried. I dug down 10" and popped out an old stick pin/brooch...but it looked like a big, piece of junk encased in crusty dirt:cool:....so I just stuck it in my pouch. Little did I know that when I cleaned it later...it would turn out absolutely beautiful....and was sterling silver.:surprised:

I plugged along for a short time longer and popped out a tax token and one more injun. By now I could barely feel the ends of my toes... the ends of my fingers...and had stuff frozen to my face.:smoke: ...so it was time to call it a day.:bouncy:

I got back to the car...and pulled stuff out of the pouche to see what I had.
I picked up the silver dime and put on my glasses to try and see through the rust covered front. My heart skipped a beat when I thought I saw a glimmer of a seated lady peeking through.:yikes: If I held it just right...I thought I could make out the outline right above where the date should be.:yo:

Once I got home I started to try and get the crud off the coin to see what I had. I worked over 2 hours on this coin trying to get the rust off of it.:stars: In all my years of detecting...I've never had a silver coin this hard to get clean. Finally...after a ton of baking soda...a ton of lemon juice.....and a sore finger and thumb from rubbing:stars:...an 1877 Seated Lady peeked through the crud.:wiggle: YIPPEE.:surprised: Glad I listened to the nagging voice in my head that told me to go hunting today.:detecting:

My take for the 2 hours...some peace and solace...an 1877 Seated dime...2 more injuns'..a tax token...and the absolutely beautiful Silver stick pin/brooch.

This has been an amazing year for me...and this hobby has gotten me through some very tough times. Thanks for sharing this with me...and good luck on your next hunt.:beers:

You might want to test the diamonds on the broach, I found a round shaper broach in Florida that did INDEED have 21 real diamonds set in sterling ... so ya never know

Ya'll made some nice finds ... now drink ya something WARM and thaw out a little

Mike

Nice coin and a good job on that seated. it was pretty beat up. Your usual description of the hunt was informative and helpful to us all. keep swinging

PS) looks like something nicked it near the letters, ES near the top

bryce, great going bud: that occupation token is one in a lifetime..very beautiful.that alone was worth all that snot.merry christmas and ,oh yeah, pass the comments on to the yeti.hh

Like Mike said, get the diamonds tested. If that broach is sterling silver then probably the diamonds are real. :surprised:

That would seal the season with a nice kiss!

Very nice finds buddy and a great story as always.:clapping: Glad that you were able to get out and just another testament to all of us that there are still some neat old coins out there for all of us to find. Hope you can get out again before you hang it up for the winter. HH.

thanks for responding buddy. I hope to get another hunt or 2 in...as long as the ground doesn't freeze on me. Good luck on your next hunt.

an inch or so. I didn't want to take any chances..so away we went. Right now the ground is okay after 2" down...so I hope it stays that way for another couple of weeks or so. I would like to get another hunt or 2 in. Are you all frozen up? Take care

That would be a nice little bit of icing on the cake. I don't have a diamond tester right now...but I will have them tested somewhere when I get time.

they would pop out more often. Merry Christmas to you too my friend. I'll pass the message on to "the Yeti".
Take care Ellis

beat up...but it sure has the "snot" worn out of it:crylol:
As for the little nick...well...I got frustrated after 2 hours of cleaning...and I knew it wasn't a key date or anything. Well...here goes. I got out my little dremel tool...put a little soft cotton polishing head on it...and tried to get a little rust off the top. The cotton head promptly flew accross the room...then the dremal stabbed my finger... causing me to jump...then nick the coin:bouncy:

have them tested when I get time. I hope to get another hunt in before the freeze...but for now...you're right...I need to thaw out. Take care buddy.

as we are frozen here and I don't see it thawing until Spring. I'll just have to to go to the Library to do some research for the upcoming season. HH

It sounds like you had a ripper of a day Bryce! Congrats.:clapping:
It's an inspiration to hunt previously hunted sites.
Thanks for posting about it.
Mick Evans.
