Still learn on mind Steve. There is a learning curve but alot of people love them and love the deep they get. You have to learn all the sounds its making 
I use it on Sunday when SCdigger & I hunted. I found alot of junk, but I was digging more Than normal. I was told you have to use it 20 hours to get use to it. We will see

Go to the beach forum and ask them... Gravedigger Max is the guy to PM. Nice guy. Alex is a guy (in Brooklyn) who just started using one last year and has some real good success. There are many more. Most guys at my beach use an Excal. There are also a couple that stick with the Sovereign and do some modifications to waterproof them or wear the box around their neck. They use some big coils too. I don't see too many people work deep water here because it's just too rough in the surf. I'll only work thigh deep water myself (with the CZ20) and even then I have to be real careful. I've gotten knocked down a couple of times and let me tell you, it's a scare feeling. You really have to respect the power of the surf.
The Excal, I'm told, is very stable in salt water so for your fresh water digs you shouldn't have a problem. I take a chance in the shallow surf with the Exp II but I have to say that it's more sensitive to small gold than the Excal. Unfortunately, it doesn't handle the 2nd party coils well in salt water (lots of falsing). My CZ20 is a fine machine with some decent depth, but it can't compare to the Exp II in sensitivity to small targets and the ID'ing capability. The depth I get at the beach with the Exp is sick The CZ loves iron.
