Alright, I am the proud new owner of an EX II.......

I got it used of of the forum and it came with a 10 and an 8 inch coil. Been detecting for 30+ years but my first question is, what other types of coils or accessories would ya'll recommend to add to the arsenal. That way if I see something come up and it's a good price, I'll know to act on it or not. Also, If the EX II has a 1/8 in. headphone jack why do all of the headphones come with 1/4 in. plugs? How do you get around this if you already have high dollar phones with the wrong plug?

Congratulations on your purchase. To use the headphones with the 1/4" plug you need to buy the Sunray stand for your Explorer. It has the bigger plug on back of it.

...same as my Fisher CZ-70 and most other mainstream machines. I think you're thinking Explorer XS, which I believe does have an 1/8" jack.

Anyway, congrats on the new Explorer II. You'll like it. As to your coil question, if you intend to do beach hunting or woods and fields I would say get a 12.5" coil. I have the EXcelerator and it's very nice. I had the Sunray when I had my Sovereign Elite and liked it a lot too, so you're preference. Both are very well made, in my opinion.

In case anybody doubts the 1/4" jack for some reason, this is from the specs in the manual...

Mike is certainly right on the Explorer 11 has a 1/4 plug and the XS has the 1/8 plug...
Two options radio shack has an adaptor for about two bucks to use 1/4 jack on an 1/8 jack. also if its a XS can buy the Sunray adaptor that doubles as a stand.Even if its a modified 11 model with 1/8 jack the radio shack adaptor will work..In any case an easy fix to use your top of the line headphones..Headphones that came with XS had the 1/8 jack and just were not the best quality....Hope I covered your options...

I had to replace my control unit face plate, was sent a Exp II face. It is a direct replacement, LCD screen clips in from XS. Works fine just says EXP II on front.

Hey Rick !!

Just on the plugs , 1/4 inch is by far the better choice , as they don't get bent , and have a much better contact reliability, you can to to radio shack etc , and get an eighth into quarter adaptor , it is just a quarter jack with the eighth hole in the back of it !!

If you detect in high metals sites [old pubs, houses , etc] , i would recommend a small elliptical double D coil , the Coil Tech one is 5.5 inches X 9.5 inches , thats a good start anyway , i have one on my XII , and it has saved my SANE life !!

Cheers Paul.

I have never heard of a genuine MKII with a .125" jack plug fitting.
There is something very wrong here.
What makes you so sure that you have a MKII and not a XS with a MKII bottom shaft and coil fitted to it???
Just contact minelab if you dont believe me.

But even if it WAS an Explorer XS with an Explorer II lower shaft and coil, the control box on an Explorer II also says "Explorer II" on it. And his digital mode should also have the dual-numbers for Ferrous and Conductive. If all of the above are not the case, then it's not an Explorer II. And if all the above ARE the case, then it should have a 1/4" jack. I suppose it's POSSIBLE that there were a few early models built with the 1/8" jack, but doesn't seem likely. Wouldn't it be nice sometimes if factory reps ever read the forums and weighed in on stuff like this? Never seems to happen though.

Per Dick at Minelab in Vegas......"No Ex2 had 1/8" jack - that was one of the main reasons for coming out with the EX2 - to go to the larger jack."

Well there we go then!

Except I hope they had more than THAT in mind when coming out with the Explorer II. That's kind of like saying "The main reason we redesigned the Corvette was to put a better radio in it."

Hi Rick,

I recon you should go back to the guy who sold you your Explorer XS/MKII now that Minelab have confirmed what we have been telling you that they have never produced a MKII with a 1/8" jack plug fitting.
Mind you theres nothing wrong with XS performance.
ATB,

Jerry.
