Amazing Omega and 5" coil

Hit 7 wheats and a well worn 1918 Merc. today. What was so rewarding, though, was the Merc. was in a pile of trash. Literally, a heap of trash. The Mercury dime was 4" deep and in the clod of dirt was 2 pieces of a broken junk earring, a folded tab tail, a small piece of foil and a 1/4" washer. the Omega and 5" coil, none the less locked onto the dime with a solid 84 reading. All the trash items were somewhat spread out and the 5" coil was able to see the dime. Some kind of detector, in my opinion. I had some emi chatter from some nearby power lines, so went to 16 disc. for most of the hunt and sen. of 99 and d4 tones. HH jim tn

Well done Jim! I have to get one of those coils. I currently have the stock coil, and the 11" DD. I have two very specific sites earmarked for a hunt with the small coil...I've gotten the "easy to isolate targets", but the areas are so littered with iron that I need to try a smaller coil. At one of the sites, most targets recovered have been in the 3 - 5" depth range, so the 5" coil should do very well. The other, some of the good targets are in the 6 - 8" range, so the 5" may be limited there.

I wish First Texas would consider an 8" inch DD for moderate trash....it would allow for better coverage and depth over the 5", and a little better separation than the 11" DD.

Eric, thanks, and I am kind of with you on the 8" DD, as well. However, don't under estimate the depth of the 5." I am getting 6-7" deep coins that, while they don't blow your ear drums out, they sound good enough to think there is still a little more depth to be had with careful listening. HH jim tn

Congrats Jim, some nice finds and amazing depth you are getting with that little coil. I've only hunted with it once, but after having been through one of my most productive areas with the 11"DD I know I have to eventually go back through the area with my 5". Since it's cold it might not be a bad time to try it out!

Your 4" dime find sounds too good to be true or was it a coincidence (but I don't believe in those anyway). I mean did you actually see the VID or hear the coin AND the trash? I've found coins next to iron, yes, but a tab tail and washer hit around near coins. Amazing job for you and the Omega if that sound or VID came through.

You know next year I'm looking to get another detector that allows me to play with settings, as that is a part of the hobby for me. But I can't see me getting rid of the Omega, I just can't believe the performance. I really hope they come out with a higher end Omega like unit so I can play a bit...

earthmansurfer, I actually heard the dime and in conjunction saw the vid 84. When I pin pointed, it locked on the dime with the 84 vid. I did get some mid tones an 81-82 reading very close to the 84. I suspect that was the washer, which was in the upper part of the clod, maybe 2" deep. I had dug a same size one a little earlier out of the same driveway that id'ed 82. In all my years of swinging, I have never had a small coil as precise as this one with the Omega is. HH jim tn

You have taken the time to know what it can and can't do. You also know how to max the results.

Thanks Jim, Double congrats then. I will be trying that coil when I next go.
That is really incredible. Hard to believe a little coil consistently is getting so much depth.

Thanks again. Eric and El. This morning was pretty close to a bust, however. Did get one wheat, but good targets were few and far between. Got a couple days of striper fishing coming up on the weekend, so perhaps my mind wasn't altogether tuned into dirt fishing. Good excuse, anyway. Hope everyone finds some good stuff this weekend. I've always favored a good smaller-than-stock coil for most of my hunting, and the 5" DD for these Teknetics is a champ! Right now it's on a G2 and I might have to consider getting another so I don't have to swap coils that often. :)

Keep up the search and your reports.
