An old shoe buckle found a few weeks ago.

I found this while working a stone wall in an old field. I had know idea how old! Everything we had found nearby had been coming up 1840 to 1920s coins and tokens plus odd brass and lead objects of coin size. This is much older.

This buckle appears to be of a copper alloy and gave a steady 34 on my XT70. It was 14" deep and the first thing I moved was a large rock.
It is a little less than 3" by 2". I think it is about 1770 +/- 10 years. It came out in 2 pieces. I first thought I had found 2 different objects.

I'm no expert in buckles, but have found a couple of colonials myself. Probably about 30 or so. It may even be older than your date, but it's a good guess. Depends on how far your particular area goes back to. Our New England area goes back to the 1600's and has a lot of 1740's sites along with the normal 1790's era. Nice find!! Keep hunting that area for some coinage, to give you an idea of how old it is. HH

I've seen literature that shows that type of shoe buckle to be from the 1690's to about the 1720's , very nice find.
