An unknown item from a late war site

I recovered this brass piece with wood on the end. Any ideas? I found it right along with some fired confederate bullets on a hillside that would have been occupied by the union.

Reckon that's a jacketed round fired into a tree or board? Maybe from same rifle as those shell casings.
Just a thought! Good hunt you had!! I feel ya on the tree roots. Where I hunt a lot of roots are poison ivy,
but in winter you don't know that and the roots are more potent than the leaves because of the sap running
back down to the roots. I don't wear gloves unless extremely cold so get some on my hands now and then.
No pain no gain I guess!
