Andy Flind - Sad News

It is with great regret that I must announce the passing of Andy Flind (designer of the Magnum Metal Detector, and many others).
Andy passed away peacefully in his sleep at 4:00am on Saturday 5 June, after a short but aggressive illness.
Andy, a TRUE industry icon, had many other projects in the pipeline that would have benefited us here, and of course, all those interested in electronics in general.
Andy's magazine projects, and his postings on many forums were the starting point for many a hobbyist, many of whom have gone one to make a career of electronics. In my case, 90% due to Andy and his work!!
Andy retained his inimitable sense of humour, right until the end, still laughing and joking about things, and, although in constant pain, still had a smile for those who visited him.
Andy's favourite saying was D.I.L.L.I.G.A.F (Do I Look Like I Give A F*#k). It summed up his attitude to things, when people got too involved or worked up about little things, and I for one subscribe to Andy's point of view.
The other love (apart from his wife Christine, and his family, then electronics, not always in that order ;-) ) was BEER...Or rather Real Ale, and Andy's homebrew was mighty potent stuff, but still nectar of the god's.
I moved to Taunton in Somerset in 1989, and little did I know at the time that Andy also lived here. It took me 11 years to find out that one of my childhood heroes, not only lived in the same town, but just over a mile from my house. So, although I only knew him as a friend for just over three years, the depth and breadth of Andy

That is sad news and he will be greatly missed. Please pass on my condolences to his family. Its a timely warning that we should contact old friends rather than let things drift as we all tend to do in the rush of modern life.

Very sorry to hear about Andy. A brilliant person, with a flair for writing and designing in the field of electronics, and making it all understandable to the hobbyist. We corresponded for a while many years ago, but only met last year at the Corfe Castle Metal Detector Rally where as well as detecting, (until a WW1 live grenade was found), Dave Emery, Marl Pauls, Andy, Christine and myself enjoyed a friendly chat and a few glasses of real ale.
Condolences to Christine and family

Here is a picture from Corfe (Eric left and Andy right). Andy will be missed by all who knew him, Dave. * * *

I wish to express my sympathy for his family and friends. I didn't know him but would have thanked him if I had a chance. The gold in this picture is a small portion of thousands of pieces found by me with a slightly modified Magnum VLF Detector. Andy was ahead of his time and the world will now surely miss his presence.

Hi All
Very sad news about Andy. I met him last year, when this photo was taken, fresh as an eagle, but even the biggest eagles will fall.
He was a very warm and gently person, that shared a lot with many people.
May he never be forgotten.
Mark
