hey all,

i have been thinking about getting into this hobby for a while now but most have said im too young (25). i have been reading alot of the articles on this site and veiwing everyones finds. i was thinking about what type of detector to get but when i visited my family for the holidays i spoke to my brother about all this he just so happened to have a brand new bounty hunter 202 sitting in his closet that he didnt want, cha-ching!!!!! he never found anything good with it living in the middle of nowhereville so he lost intrest. me living in southeast florida feel i have a better than average shot at finding some good stuff! i want to hit the beaches but other than that im stumped for ideas. ill figure it out as i go. wish me luck!, i may need it. :)
 
The 202 may not do you well on Salt Water beaches...You could give it a try, but I think you will have to stay away from the wet sand areas...It may work in the Dry Sand though...

hello, i dont know how well the 202 will do on the beach, i have one and never tried it...but i will say it is a coin and relic killer. i started out in this very addictive hobby 25 years ago when i was 14...is that too young too? hahaha , not hardly! get to know your machine maybe by starting out in your own yard. good headphones are important too. theres some very knowledgeable hunters on this forum that are willing and able to help you. good luck and hh
 
I agree with Gray Ghost, a comfortable set of earphones is essential, I use the Koss ur30 and they are the best in the world in my opinion. I use the BH tracker IV, I'm not familiar with the 202? Not sure where it lives on the price range etc, as it isn't on the BH site. My units work great on the dry sand, however on the wet sand the Sensitivity must be turned down until the falsing (erratic noises) stops. If you keep your swing speed and height constant, you will be able to detect where other BH users cannot operate, due to falsing. Good technique is important, I have found well in excess of $20,000 worth of coins and jewelery in the last couple of years with these units, it'll detect to the same depth as the other BH but without the bells and whistles. The settings I use: sens 4 oclock (if possible), toggle set at tone disc, disc dial at lowest setting. You will pick up a lot of junk with these settings, but on the plus side you will take home more jewelery than other BH users. Pull tabs, and other items fall into the same range as Gold and Platinum, so if you discriminate them out your are leaving great jewelery behind. Childrens play grounds (sand or chip-bark) are also good for LOOT. It's amazing how many coins and jewelery items I have found in them. Hope you enjoy the hobby, HH regards Nugget.:)
 
The BH - Pioneer 202 is Wal-Mart's brand of the BH-Lone Star...It is a great starter machine, and perhaps one that will last you a while...I started with a 202 and found quite a bit of clad with it...I then moved up to the 505, and gained some better discrimination, the no motion All-Metal mode and the Auto-Notch mode...I now hunt with the Land Star, which gave me even better discrimination, the Auto-Notch, the no motion All-Metal mode and the manual ground balance. The 202 will clean up on tot lots, dry sand, field day sites, ect...I do not think it will work well on salt water beaches though...

I just came from the beach and hunted for an hour,Sunday morning in Port Aransas Texas. I found 48 cents in clad. I found a quarter at around 10" deep. I worked the wet sand where I found most of the pennies and a nickel and dime. Itseems to work just fine. In fact this is the first time I did not find a ring tab!!!! I live in central texas and go up to Canyon Lake and hunt the swim beaches and have only found ring tabs and a few clad.

i think it has alot to do with the mineralazation ( think i spelled that right :nerd: )down here. im sure the sand is much differant here than it is where you are rennie. i do pretty good in the dry sand but as soon as i get near the water the detector starts receiving alot of false signals, either that or theres a whole pirate ship under the sand! i could have dug my own grave trying to figure out where those signals where coming from! :goodnight: but my overall experience with the 202 has been great, i just got to get around to posting more of my finds.
 
Did you ever get up to your parents house and detect? I found 58 cents today between two local playgrounds! Plus a small charm that registered as zinc so it's not silver.
