Another "buffalo" rescued from the deep.

Another beautiful day at the beach; at low tide, I found a few clads, a 1945 "wheatie" , a Connecticut quarter..and this "Buffalo"....that was it for today....

This is the clearest Indian image coin that I have found..too bad the date is illegible...I think I see a 7 ...but that's about it..would be a 1917, '27 or '37..but I will never know...:(

Even though the coin is somewhat corroded, it is one of the better "buffs: that I have found...at least I can see the "five cents" stamp..I'm pleased with that.

Yes, they are hard to find...and I love to see that Indian on the obverse or the buffalo on the reverse when I scoop up a nickel.

I found it near where that trolley stopped at the beach so many years ago...I have a feeling that there are many more old coins to find in that section.

I have found several mercs in the same area..

there are so many beaches within a 20 -30 minute car ride from my house, that I have a difficult time trying to decide which beach to hunt at on any given day..I try to rotate the beaches just for a change of scenery...some are more lucrative than others, but I like to go to different ones each day.

deciding on which beach to hit :) I try to decide on which tot lot to hit. Tomorrow I have some lined up to do. Steve in so az

Put a drop of tobasco where the date was, wait a bit and wipe it off and then look! :)

Tot lots are great places to detect; my brother, who lives in Florida like to hunt the playgrounds...and he has found some really nice jewelry there.

good luck tomorrow

What do you mean by "a bit"? I just poured some on...about 1/2 hour maybe..or a couple of hours?

I find these coins on some of the oldest beaches in New England here in Ct.
I've been told by the "locals" that these beaches were inhabited since the late 1600's . There were summer cottages all along the shore line up until the 1970's when the old cottages as the homes were called, were torn down , (or torched in many cases) to make room for the more modern condominiums.

People from all over Ct. would visit for weeks during the summer at these rented or privately owned cottages and swim in Long Island Sound.
I don't remember if I had posted the 1899 Barber half -dollar that I had found at one of these beaches ( or the 1893 one that I found , but gave to my brother, who is a coin collector) Was I ever surprised to see that "cookie coin" in my scoop..really big and heavy

This past summer, I also found a 1923 class ring!

these coins and rings are found far from shore..I usually hunt way out in the flat mud or "troughs" at low tide.

I know that there are many , many more coins to be found...I just don't have all that time ( 3-4 hrs max almost every day...that is still not enough time) to spend detecting at these beaches

Some of my friends detect all day....stopping for lunch or just a rest ..they come down from New York State and stay for the day.

I'll post pics of that barber half -dollar after this note

Just where the date was. Not sure how it works with salt water coins. What happenes is where the date was the sause makes it so you can see the date for a bit.

congrats on the find...an old coin is an old coin

Sure wish I could get out to detect. Waiting for Mar 23....I am still expecting snow gone, ground thawed and Warthog swinging his detector with me up here at the ball field and maybe some other places.
