Another detecting TV show Dig fellas?

Just read that Travel channel has another detetcing show coming in Sept. called "Dig Fellas". Not sure what I think about these shows, but alls i can say is after the debacle of American digger & that wrestler the only way to go is up hopefully. I liked Travels Dig Wars the best of all the shows so far as they didnt say "Colone roundness' stuff or climb trees. I heard this new show its Bill Ladd and his friend from u tube.

Personally I do not like the TV shows so far. They give the general public a very bad image of our hobby.

For a number of years I was an Avid Geocacher here in South Carolina. A gentleman hid a bunch of caches in Cemeteries in the Beaufort SC area. Someone made some foolish posts on the Geocache pages and a local politician found out about the posts. She had legislation in the South Carolina house to Completely Ban Geocaching in South Carolina. It appeared that it was going to pass and become law as the Legislature was not properly informed about what Geocaching really and truly was.

Had it not been for an all out effort and appearance at the hearings by Geocaching Enthusiasts Geocaching would have been banned.

With what I have seen out of those TV shows I fear for our Hobby. I have already had an invitation to detect a 1 acre lot (where the owner said troops camped during the Civil War) rescinded due to the home owner having seen just one episode of Diggers. I could not convince him that I was not an Idiot and did not act in that manner.

I am very disappointed with Garrett actually bragging that "Diggers" used their equipment as I think that in the long run it will come back to bite them when Cities and Counties across this nation start banning Metal Detecting in the parks and playgrounds. Politicians are always on the search for something to restrict our freedoms and make themselves look good to an uninformed public.

Already one can not Metal Detect the County Parks in Charleston County South Carolina with the exception of the two beach parks. I have a large park within 5 miles of my home and research showed that there was a structure located on the property in the early 1800's but I can not go detect the site due to the asinine law.

I know that many disagree with my view of the TV shows and I sincerely hope that I am wrong but for some reason I doubt that I am.

I could not agree more. It's a sad fact of our culture that the majority are here to be entertained, not enlightened. The result is "reality shows" that simply cannot resist the temptation to "spice up" their shows with ridiculous drama aimed at the same audience that still believes professional wrestling is real. The result is a public that "knows what those guys are doing".

My son is experiencing this firsthand. He's currently employed at a high end automotive restoration shop that's the subject of a new reality show. He is very good at what he does and justifiably has a lot of pride in his work, his fellow employees, and the shop in general. For the past year, he's had to dodge the cameras whenever possible, trying his best to be left out of the lowbrow manufactured drama the producers insist on injecting into the show. And the occasional "good" drama that showcases the morality and professionalism of the shop is usually left on the cutting room floor.

Very well written. People/businesses in our hobby are selling out for money and/or 'glory'.

It is tough. I love anything treasure. And the diggers, amd and sd shows had more to the show then just detecting. They go for anything. And go big with excavators. And they always sell for big money.

The most recent show [Digg wars] I really enjoyed. We all know a few of the stars of the show, and I have watched their youtube vids for a long time. I think a better picture of detecting was presented in that show and I would like a return.

I will say this, there is a huge boom in the hobby because of all of them. All I can say about that is "get better". Plan ahead. Get better with your tools. And out do your competition. I see lots of hunters out there...maybe its shoulder problems, but the swing coil like gold club. Even if you swing detector like a club, you can do damage with big rings an silver coins. They tend to hit hard...if the coil is over it it is over it. They are going to get that target. But will probably miss lots more.

Read. Read the forums. Read about peoples finds. Read books. I am slowly amusing a collection of literature on all things treasure. It was something I read that made me go "search over there" and I found a gold coin that was a pendant that day. In all probability, it was dropped that day by a surfer. It is just in too good of condition for soft gold. 1 in a million find, and not going to happen all the time.

Sharing spots. My take on that. Don't do it. Expecting to "own" a spot. Not going to happen. Not anymore. In years past there might have been 1 water hunter every 25-30 square miles. Now there are 10. And they all know how to use google earth.

In the end, even If I find nothing it is all about fun and something to do. If you enjoy the hobby, don't let the shows or competition discourage you. Who knows, you could get discouraged when there are 9 other treasure hunters out there and leave...or "go over there" and find something!
