Sorry to hear of his death and may he rest in peace! No one knows when their time on this earth is over and that's why each of us needs to be ready to meet Jesus, for our spirit goes back to God who gave it! Salvation of the soul is before mortal death and not after.....too late for the sinner to repent then!
