Another Question

In an effort to get more people talking here on the forum, I asked a question a couple of weeks ago. There were a lot of replies! Thanks! I have another question for you now. I'm sure most of us have heard the saying, "He/she is too heavenly minded to be any earthly good." What do you think about that? What does that statement mean to you? IS it possible to be so heavenly minded that you are no earthly good? Explain what you think and how you feel about that.

If there is good response to this question, like there was for the last one, I think I will start posting these about every two weeks or so.

Can't say I ever heard that one before. I have a thought, but maybe you can explain what the saying means?

Lisa, I have never heard that! It sounds like something I would hear around these parts tho... I do have an idea of what is meant by that and I suppose people could interpret many different ways. I have known people who are so caught up in (a good thing) being the ideal Christian, that they don't put themselves in situations where they could be a witness to others. I'm probably not describing this well....I'll use an example. For instance, many of the friends I have in high school have not changed for the better. While, I do not have any desire to do the things they do (drink, swear, etc.), totally avoiding them altogether would be sad. Firstly, I would not be able to witness to them, secondly, I would tell them that they aren't good enough to be in my circle and that I don't care about them. I've seen some people so rigid in their faith that they lose out on precious opportunities. Jesus certainly wasn't afraid to go to the sinners! That being said, I'm not a fan of putting yourself in impossible circumstances, but do think if the love of Christ lives within us, we must be willing to go places that are sometimes uncomfortable to us.

I have heard that saying many times - - & even have seen it in action :) I knew a guy who wanted to always be running the religeous show - always thought he should be the preacher to everyone. He was in fact no good to anyone except to make a good example of what not to be. steve in so az

I know what Steve is talking about there false prophets in the world and you can spot them out of the crowd !

This is odd because I have had that quote on my mind the last couple of weeks. Actually it's been in the back of my mind that I'd like to tell this one individual just that. That she is about to get too heavenly minded to be of any earthly good. (of course I'm not going to tell her this) To me it means that you so spiritual that you almost lose site of real people issues, you get out of touch with the normal folks. The Bible says that Jesus was tempted in all manner like we are and that he is touched with the feeling of our infirmities. Sometimes people can began to try and live in such a spiritual world that they really can't relate to what's going on with regular people.

I thin you can be very spiritual and in touch with God and still be able to walk in the natural realm also.

Wow! I'm really surprised that so many people have never heard this saying before. I have heard it many times. I just now Goggled "too heavenly minded to be any earthly good" and page after page came up on this subject. It basically refers to someone being so wrapped up in church, obsessed with reading their Bible, etc., that they really become no good to the earthly world that needs them, for whatever reason: to be a witness, to get out and help others, to be a husband/wife to their wife/husband, or the type of parent their child needs, etc. Liz said it in a good way, " I have known people who are so caught up in (a good thing) being the ideal Christian, that they don't put themselves in situations where they could be a witness to others." Steve gave a good example also. "I knew a guy who wanted to always be running the religious show - always thought he should be the preacher to everyone. He was in fact no good to anyone except to make a good example of what not to be." I have known a couple of people who never wanted to leave their homes except to go to church. They read their Bible for a few hours each day, prayed for themselves & their family, watched Christian television and nothing else. They were afraid they would become contaminated by the world is they got out among the people are participated in anything at all. Their minds were on heavenly things, but were they REALLY any earthly good? Is it possible to be so heavenly minded that we are no earthly good??? Or should we be heavenly minded (and nothing else) and let chips fall where they may?

Theresa, you just nailed it. That is what it means.

Believe me, Lisa, I know exactly what it means and agree with Steve and Theresa on it's application.

Yep. Heard it many times and had a way cool Christian man ask me about it a couple weeks ago. It was presented to him as being a bad thing to say about another Christian. I tend to agree with was posted here. Some folks are so wrapped up in "religion" that they forget that this life we are called to is about relationship. I am not really thinking that they are being intentionally selfish, but in shutting out the world we shut out opportunity to witness. I think after talking about it for a bit he seemed to agree with this side.

Can we be in the world and not have world be in us? We are strangers here, I look forward to the day we get to go home. In the meantime there is still work to be done.

A little different point of view would point out those souls who spent countless thousands of hours translating the bible or writing it down, in order to preserve it through history. In these circumstances it would seem that the statement could be false. The difference in my mind would be these folks, probably did not "hide from the world" to keep from being contaminated.

Does this make sense?

Hi Lisa, seems like most have answered already and I agree with Theresa, Liz and others! I guess most could say that about me because I don't go anywhere very much but I use the Internet for my witnessing and being on the Vews Forum trying to post the truth about Jesus and who Christians really are in Christ was a tough circumstamce and only for another reason have I mostly quit posting on it! I don't keep having to face sinners or others as a way not to go out...I just have gotten used to staying home a lot since quitting MD'ing and my brother passing away because of health and finances! I try to show Jesus is within me when I do go somewhere and smile a lot....actually I laugh too much for some peole because these days I am a very happy person in the Lord! I have heard that phrase many times....and I think it means a person can be too involved in church doings and not be a useful witness to those who need it...like all the religious dinners and other things that go on in a church for the youth and etc. Some even do it to their fanily's detriment and even preachers when they are called out by those who need prayer and need someone to talk to, which is a good thing but not good for the family and even him or herself! Like the questions and May God Bless you and yours! Amen! Ma Betty

I think we all need to be Jesus minded, and all else will fall into place.
Also we are all called to spread the gospel. ( The great commission )

Well..... I AM an expert at talking! I've had a lot of experience.
