Was told by more than one that it's a bent hoof pick, but I've found 3 of them, one at an old homesite, one a Civil War site and one at a stagestop and inn site, and all 3 look exaclty like this.

First off, how big is this impliment?
If it is a bent hoof pick, it sure looks like an awkward design and a waste of material. Not at all in keeping with our forefathers. As well, from the look of the iron, I would guess that would take some doing to bend it around like that cold. <img src="/metal/html/frown.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":(">
This thing puts me in mind of those D-handled panel carriers for drywall. You know what I mean, eh? Handy things those.
Is there any sign of wear in the crook of the existing hook?
I'm thinking this might have been a handy little device to hook on a cauldron handle to lift a fresh batch of potash soap off the fire or carry a big pot of boiling water???
