Anticipation can lead to frustration

Literally worked for months getting permission to search this old church/home site. Had to get permission from the church board, etc. Got permission as long as this one guy is on the property when I detect. Ok, no problem. Finally the day arrives that I have anticipated for nearly a year. Worked the area between the street and sidewalk and the side yard for 3 hours only to find a lot of trash and six memorial cents! The best finds were a little brass (?) bell that had obviously met a lawnmower and a copper spatula or ladle. So when I get done I show my "treasures" to the guy that helped me get permission. He tells me that there must have been a hundred guys over the years with metal detectors working the site. Thanks, that would have been nice to know months ago. Oh well, it was a nice day, met some nice folks and I can scratch this site off my to do list.

lol, typical that people get to a site before you lol. The way that i avoid this is to hunt family owned properties when i can, got a aunt and uncle in virginia with a house built before the civil war and they have owned it since the 60's as far as i am aware and nobody has touched it cant wait to go hunt it.

Something tells me that the "hundred guy's with metal detectors" did NOT get permission to detect that property before you but went ahead and did it anyway? That must have been a kick in the butt to hear that after the fact!

So true Goldstrike.

I am sure that they did not have permission GS which begs the question why did I have such a hard time getting it? Wheat Cent, sounds like a great site. Be sure and let us know what you find up there.

I will :) going to wait till the weather starts improving back east since it is technically winter and I know that it gets bad where they live.

Thats tough.
I run into that situation often, too.
Then I ask myself had I known so many others has been there before, would I still have hunted it?
I always answer 'yes'

Bik-il you make a good point and I agree as I do not believe that any site is truly "hunted out", but chances of finding much of interest certainly diminishes. I have a friend that has hunted an old school property numerous times and insists that there is nothing more to find. I have never hunted it, but do plan on hunting the site just to see if that is the case.

Sorry, could not help but see this post. I am not a Safari owner, but like to read the posts here.

I think you are looking at this all wrong (Glass half-full/half-empty situation).
Why not go back and do just mostly the yard and forget about the sidewalk area?

Sanderling.......If you still have a chance to go back to detect that home/site, I would try again and you might want to try different settings if you hadn't already. Maybe go deeper in A.M. trying different sensitivity settings. Maybe a different coil size. Sometimes when you sweep an area that you've already gone over, sweep it from a different angle because there are times when I have done that and buried items show up which they might not have otherwise. Also, ground balancing is an important thing to do. We are all rooting for you and hope you have success the 2nd time around!

Thanks guys. Coilfisher, I did the area between the walk and street just as a starting point. This is acutally a pretty large property and has a church dating back to 1888 on it. There are two side yards and I only worked the larger one that is on the right side of the house. I have been invited back. I will take GS's advice and try a different approach. I also have a Fisher CZ6a that I will use along with the Safari the next time. Don't know when I will get back down there, but will let y'all know of any finds. I also need to get over to that school I mentioned above.
