I'd check out several sources and see what they say. Looks REALLY old

I believe it is a ring they used to use in the cities when there was no sewers?

They used to put some form of "nice smelling stuff" in the container and when things got "rank" they would open it and sniff the "nice smell" to keep from gagging (I read that in some history thing or saw it on some history documentary)

That is a good find no matter what and so with the Barber!

snuff is also poison-regaurdless it a real great find -check it out value wise before cleaning as some item are worth more with mark of age on them-I'd be interested in knowing the out come on ring-also how deep was it

Ring was 4 inches deep!
