Any beach tips?

oasis

New member
Hi guys. Had an alright day today with my 2 day old 150, thanks for your warm welcome on the forum. Im wondering if you experienced people have any tips for my next outing tomorrow? Im going to the beach with my ace 150, and im sure you will all know that it has 3 modes, all metal, jewelry and coins. im wondering what mode and sensitivity i should use it on. Hope to hear from you all, will let you know how it goes. Thanks
Chris

Welcome to the forums, I have a Ace 250 so I might not be affective: Try level 4 sensitivity and coins mode for hunting coins. I tried lev 5 on coins mode with my 250 and it went well. But for the 150 try 4. Hope this helps!:detecting::garrett:

Depends what you are looking for Chris.
If you are looking for gold jewelry dig everything
that isn't iron, Grid off small sections of high traffic
areas and search them well. Get there early to avoid
a lot of the interesting questions you may be asked.
Hope you have a good scoop or sifter for the sand.
Don't be afraid of backing off the sensitivity if you
get a lot of false signals. Dig anything that beeps and
don't worry about the target I.D. Best advice I have for
you is to just keep on digging and don't let up. The more
targets you dig the better the chances will be of getting
more goodies. Just playing the odds. The light weight
of the 150 will be really nice for many hours of swinging
without wearing out your arm. You may get tired of digging
in the sand but if you come up with a big fat gold ring you
wont notice it much after that. Let us know how it goes.
Best of luck on the beach tomorrow Chris ! Gene

Just do what Gene says. You'll do the best you can, that way.

Use all metal and dig everthing.,that way you'll learn what the ACE is telling you.
Make sure you have a good sand scoop and pouch to hold all the targets you'll find.

Thanks very much, will definitely try your suggestions, will let you know how i get on tomorrow

Excellent, thank you very much gene, will definitely heed your advice. Do you tend to get a lot of nosey people lol? If i do manage to get that gold ring i will make sure i post a pic of my finds, including trash lol, it shows the hard work that s needed to get that one important find, not that ive had it yet lol.
As for the scoop, i will be using the girlfriends collander, hope she doesnt find out lol.
Thanks again gene. Will post tomorrow.
All the best and thank you for the warm welcome.
Regards Chris

Thank you for the warm welcome, certainly helps a newcomer get his head around the challenges of MDing.
My ace 150 has 4 settings of sensitivity so i will try it on 3 and see how i go.
Thanks again.
All the best Chris

Takes a strong scoop in some places Chris. Depends on how packed the sand is
and it possibly you may have rocks. Not sure how your beach is in the UK. Wear
headphones if you have them. Yeah, I think you will get some spectators that will
try and talk to you. Hope you do well Chris. If it's a busy beach there will be plenty
to dig. Not all good stuff but take it all with you when you go and you wont have to
dig the same things the next time you go. If you do get a good target just put it in
your pouch and go on. Plenty of time to look at it later and you certainly don't want
at attract a crowd. Once again, best of luck tomorrow !

Am thinking that your girlfriends collander may not hold up so well.
I sometimes stand on the back of my long scoop for leverage,
Don't try that with your collander though !
You could be in for some serious digging. Hard to say as I don't
know your beach conditions.
A stainless scoop is probably the best all around and they sell
those for detecting purposes. Not cheap but made for the job. HH Gene

I like to work a grid about 30X30 front to back, then go back and work it side to side like tic tak toe. you would be surprised on how much stuff you missed the first time. good luck!:detecting:

May I pipe in here. DO you get rubber-neckers? Oh, yes. And smart asses, too. Occasionally you run into someone really nasty, but not often.

The average man or woman on the street has no real idea what you are up to. They know WHAT you are doing, but they can be curious about the 'why's' and 'how's' of it. For this bunch, one of my favorite responses is to always keep my pouch filled with trash. When someone gets to wondering what I am finding (how is it going, etc), I just pull out a wicked-ugly handful of trash and with a wild eyed look, say "See? It's a great day, woohooooo!..."
This usually runs em on along pretty good. Or, you can simply tell them you have been commissioned by the citizens beach council to clean up the trash. Again, pull out the same handful of foil and pulltabs and wave it around. I like to add, "And they are seeking volunteers to do this for free, in their spare time. Are you interested?"

If i do manage to get that gold ring i will make sure i post a pic of my finds, including trash lol, it shows the hard work that s needed to get that one important find, not that ive had it yet lol.
Whatever you do, don't stand around ogling the ring. Acknowledge it to yourself, and then put it in an INSIDE pocket, what all water hunters call a "deep hide." You may be surprised to know that some people are keen about what you are doing and will take great notice of you - if they think you have found something valuable.
Another question you will hear, more of a statement really, is this: "If you find something good (a diamond ring, gold, etc.), it's mine. " I usually just say, "Excellent! I charge by the hour and take a finders fee for all recoveries. I'll let you know when I find it."

Sometimes they say, "Did you find the ring I lost?" to which I usually say, "Not yet," and then I give them my rates and charges spiel.
Sometimes some one really has lost something, and you become an asset. These folks are in need and you can help.
Talk money and rewards with them later, after you have found their missing item.

But some people are more inclined to take what you have found, if they think you have found it. So be watchful while appearing nonchalant. Seeming to be a little crazy helps, too, and if you are built like a Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker... well, that can't hurt.

As for the scoop, i will be using the girlfriends collander, hope she doesnt find out lol.
Run, do not walk, to the nearest source of a bonafide sand scoop and buy one ASAP. There is no substitue for the right tool at the beach. Go to the nearest home center and get a large plastic scoop and drill 3/8" holes in it, if you want.. thet works good in the dry sand.
Something like is where you want to end up:

Or this:

I use one similar to this:

And, all the best to you. I hope your first outings get you some real goodies.
