I have seen maybe a hundred of these variable speed reostats(?) or dimmers on fans and have never seen a problem with them, I have often heard they will destroy the ceiling fan motor though, but they could be replaced every 10 years for cheap couldn't they?

I haven't actually heard of one causing a fire. But you should check the dimmer now and then to see if it is getting hot (if you do install one). I saw a couple of base board heater variable switches that had burned through the supply wires the other day,,, that is alot more voltage and amperage.

As a disclaimer I would say NEVER take my word for it... But do your own research! I am NOT an ELECTRICIAN.
ANYTHING that you do with Electricity could injure or kill you. Always use a licensed electrician!

It sux that we have to post these disclaimers nowadays, Jeez, what happenned to self reliance and responsibility for your own actions.( not directed at you Jim, but I have seen some exceedingly dependent people on here lately)
