any idea what this thing is?

My thoughts are that it is either an antique adjustable ring with part of the band missing or an ornament off an old purse or something to that order! But looks more like it was a ring! :shrug:

I lean towards an antique pendant, as the back looks like it has been smooth and flat without any solder marks. Perhaps the reason the two curved pieces are the way they are is that they could have been the connected together with a jump ring hooked to it for the chain to go through. Over the years the area where the jump ring positions itself wears through until the metal finally breaks and the pendant is lost. Also the stone looks like a nice Amethyst which was used frequently in antique jewelry.
I did goldsmithing for awhile and repaired a lot of pendants and rings that had been worn nearly completely through almost to the breaking point.
