Any secrets to Morel mushroom hunting?

Pete in MI

New member
Heard someone talking about it won't be long before the Morels come up. We still have a little snow on the ground but getting near the 50=50 mark of grass vs snow.

Never hunted for Morels before but I do love mushrooms. Any tips? Guessing a sharp knife to cut them and a bag of some sort to carry them. Anything else?

How does one tell a Morel from the ones that are supposed to look like them?

Find them then pick them!
Looks for dead elm trees, always use a mesh bag like an onion bag so the spores that fall of will make future shrooms. Also be sure not to eat one that is not a morrel. Go back to the same spots year after year! :)

You could check Morel Mushrooms or Mushrooms with your search engine to be able to recognize Morels and to know the difference between good and bad!

I used to go with my mother and brother in the woods and hunt them. I enjoyed finding them but never liked eating them! Mom sure did like Mushrooms....I think she cleaned, sliced and soaked them in salted water but not sure any more! Too many years have passed since those long ago days!

Cliff likes some mushrooms but now he orders any pizzas without them for me! I usually pick them off if we do get pizzas with mushrooms on them!

They made me sick years ago from a can of mushroom soup and I can't stand to even smell them cooking!!

They sell for lots of Dollars per pound though and may be a good way to make some do re me or to eat if you truly like mushrooms!

Don't get any poisonous ones and be careful of what you cook and eat!!!!!!!

God Bless & Good Luck & Happy Hunting both coins and mushrooms! Another thing is I have to watch out for Poison Ivy and Shumac as I am very allergic to them and get deathly ill along with terrible breaking out and itching!
