Any sword and knife experts here?

I found this at a new permission yesterday. The best I can tell from the finds at this site it's early 1800s, the site that is.
I've looked online and can't find anything close.
Can anyone identify it?
Thanks.

It sure looks like a sword guard to me, but I've flipped through several of the most promising books on American swords and haven't found this design yet. Reminds me of either a pre-Civil War militia sword or a fraternal sword style, but after my initial searching I feel like I've ruled out fraternal. I'll keep searching...

Looks like maybe a makers mark in last pic above opening
Might be that, or just a casting inclusion. Hard to say.

By the way, the roman numbers beneath the tang hole are for batch assembly -- the guard and blade would be fit together, then sent off for say plating of the guard, polishing and etching of the blade, and could then be matched back up when all of that was done.

Foreign? Dont rule that out!!!! Cool find!
