Anybody get out with their F5 lately?

Mike Hillis

Well-known member
I haven't gotten to swing my detector in weeks. Just wondering if anyone else is getting out with theirs.

I received mine last week and tested it out in the front yard(since I didn't get to go where I planned) knowing there is a lot of construction trash a few inches down. I did find a base of a broken light bulb, possibly the property marker near the curb, and a quarter. Definitely a work in progress and looking forward to becoming knowledgeable.

I've finally become one with my F5 and I love it, I mainly coin shoot not to many relic grounds where I live so I stick to coin shooting and the F5 is a monster with the Disc maxed and zinc notched in, gain at 80 and threshold at -2. I run tone setting #3 I listen first paying attention to the High repeatable tones and pass on the low tones grunts and blips. Then when a High repeatable tone is heard I turn to the display and when the confident bar is full and says Zinc Dime Quarter 50 cent it's about 95 - 100 % correct. I'm loving my F5 my wife hunts with a Tesoro DeLeon and when we're hunting close together she always asks me to check her target for her as her DeLeon rings 95 on all coins so she isn't able to tell whether its a quarter dime or penny.

Thanks for all your useful posts on the F5 Mike, reading them quickened my learning curve on the F5, hope you don't mind me passing on some of your tips, I give you full credit when I mention them to anyone.

I dug a1925 Standing Liberty Saturday it was 5 inches down and rang out loud and clear. Sorry about the image quality I took the pic with my cell phone.

I received my new F5 yesterday and so far I've picked up $0.33 in clad and a toy car. I really need a pinpointer so I don't spend so long looking through my digs.

I have been out alot and the F5 keeps me going. I came across an old house or building site and have gotten some nice relics. The 5"DD is my favorite coil do to the super target separation and excellent depth. I usually hunt in two tone no disc and the machine rocks. I have hunted in AM but it will wear on you after awhile. I have found lead in the 6 to 7 inch range and still had a great signal. I have dropped the gain and threshold and still would have dug them. I have been debating getting the new gold bug for relic hunting but all of the news coming out is bumming me out. Mike do you think you are interested in the new gold bug for your jewelry hunting, I would like it for my relic hunting. To all who has the F5 the stock coil it will give you the best tone description but in real trash the 5 " rules. I do like the 11"DD because of the extra coverage but you do loose the sweet tones .

Take care
Bob

@too wize the pinpointer on the F5 is quite accurate. I use a thin, rounded off screwdriver to probe once I have pinpointed. Pretty successful

Hi Bob,
I looked real hard at the new Gold Bug and had originally planned on buying one but I grew tired of waiting and have moved on.

The F5 may not hit the tiniest of chains but it still does a very good job on small targets; BBs, small silver and gold clasps that were broken off tiny chains, tiny trash targets, 5mm ball earrings, earring backs, etc.

6-7 inches on small lead with the 5" DD is very good. What are your ground FE readings there?

Thats a great Standing Liberty!

You have a big advantage over the DeLeon. You've got TONES

My first electronic handheld pinpointer was a Little Wizard II. Bought it at a woodworking hardware store for 20 bucks. It worked real good for me. Might give one a look and see. It looks a bit bulky on the business end but that is a plus when you need the additional area, and you can turn it sideways as needed for finer work.

Good luck with your F5. Its a real sweet detector.

Mike at that site I only have one bar sometimes two. It is on a friends farm no emi issues and that is probably why I can run the machine really hot. The two and three ringers are pretty big so the f5 has no problem picking them up at great depths even with the small coil. The area about 10 miles south of Fredericksburg Va.

I have had the chance to swing mine a couple of times in the last week or so. I am going to be posting after I get back from hunting tonight. I found a gold wedding band last Wednesday with small diamond chips. Most of the diamonds were missing but still pretty cool. I found an old tootsie toy truck and a Princess Pat cosmetic tin from the 20's or 30's yesterday in a yard that I have hunted several times with other detectors. I still like my F5 a lot and I also appreciate your previous posts. They have been very helpful.
