Anybody know anything about this token?

I rarely find these things at my sites...and if I do they are usually corroded and chewed up.

This one however came out sweet from almost 10" down.

Spent most of the weekend hanging out with my Dad who is not well....and also mowed for nearly 7 hours...but did manage to squeak out a little huntin' on the way home.

Pulled a couple silver hunting with Kennon on Friday..but nothin' you all haven't seen befere...so thought I'd see if anyone can help ID the token.

I don't care if it's worth 50 cents...or $10...just curious on the history of it...if it's junk...or something cool.

That's a cool token, Bryce!

I couldn't find anything about the token, but someone on the German ebay site sold one for around $10 US not too long ago. The token the guy sold did not look as good as yours.

I hope your Dad will start feeling better soon!

Take care,
CAPTN SE

Nice token! I tried to find this token on the excellent web site www.tokencatalog.com and although it is listed, it is not attributed to any city or state. My guess is that Hulman & Beggs were the makers of White Seal Pure Rye (whiskey). The merchant who supplied this liquor (probably in his bar or saloon) was W.R. Stull. When I find tokens that lack any address information, I usually start looking through directories (in libraries or local historical societies) of the city near where I found the token, or the other nearby cities. You may want to contact the historical society to see if they can help you locate W.R. Stull. You can also try using Google - sometimes you get some good leads from that site, perhaps starting with Hulman & Beggs. There may be some genealogical web sites that may provide information but these usually have a monthly service fee although I think the Church of Latter Day Saints may have a free genealogical site. This is a really neat token - if I had to make a wild guess, I would put in in the 1880s - 1915 vintage. Good luck and I hope you turn something up. I also hope your Dad is felling better. HH

Bryce,

Here's some more info about "Hulman and Beggs". The reference is from an old history book from 1896.
Go down to the link where it says "part 10" of the reference. There's a little writeup about Hulman and Beggs.

I do genealogy research and I checked the 1900 Census for Illinois, figuring it probably wasn't lost far from the source. Found William R. Stull, age 55, living in Arcola Twp., Douglas Co., Illinois. Occupation is Liquor merchant, so this is probably your man. Very nice token, congrats.

That's pretty cool. Looking on the map, Arcola seems to be the only town around there too, so perhaps he ran a saloon there. If someone had access to the Sanborn map for Arcola, there might be an indication of where the saloons were. A search of the business directories from around 1900 might also yield a clue, as would searching old postcards.

Neat find!

A bit more:

Several Stulls are buried in Arcola cemetery (burial dates in parentheses).

Stull, Thomas A.d.Nov 6, 1898ae 61y
Stull, Infantd.Mar 13, 1896Dau of T.A.& Ida
Stull, James (Whitcomb) Riley1897-1969 (9/10/69)

Thanks for responding Willy...I appreciate it buddy.

Thanks Neal. Usually my tokens come out crappy...and I rarely find them anyway.
